A world without chickens? Sounds inconceivable! Chicken have always been an important part of our culture and everyday life. In addition to the obvious and well-known benefits – like, of course, their delicious meat, the indispensable eggs and the occasional function of rooster cries as a natural retro alarm clock – we often forget that the animals are even more than useful poultry.
The plumage and look of some chicken species are so incredibly beautiful that they are more like attractive works of art and mythical creatures than you’d expect. And behind some of the greatest photos of chickens are two photographers: Moreno Monti and Matteo Tranchellini, who recently published a new illustrated book “Chic!ken – The Photographic Collection”.
Monti explains he’s always been fascinated by the beauty of these birds. When he first met the Concincina hen Jessicah in 2013, he was looking for a chicken for his front yard but he immediately fell in love with its looks, and so the the idea for the book was born. What began as a small photo session during a bird exhibition soon became a mammoth project with 62 bird ‘supermodels’.
Artists insist on emphasizing that none of the animals were badly treated, forced or even chained so as not to escape the flash of lightning. On the contrary, all chicken in their photos are natural talented top models, which pose almost naturally in front of the camera.”
The resulting photos were compiled into a quality coffee-table photo book that should bring us closer to people both the outer beauty and the strong personalities of those feathered divas. To finance the artfully printed work, the photographer duo launched a Kickstarter campaign in which the goal of €8,000 was exceeded within a few days.
We are totally enchanted by the beauty of these birds and their incredible variety. “You will never look at chickens in the same way again,” say Matteo and Moreno, and we tend to believe that immediately.
