Rock Climber Immortalizes his Travels with Photography and Painting

Renan Ozturk is a Turkish-American rock climber who climbed the Shark’s Fin route to Meru Peak in the Himalaya in 2011, a story told in detail in the 2015 documentary Meru. But Ozturk is also a filmmaker and a “landscape artist at heart” – and his beautiful sketches and photographs help us see the world as he sees it – nature is art at its most divine.

Renan’s mission is “to tell stories about our connection to the natural world,” and trying to capture the wild beauty of nature through various media on his expeditions. He has been exploring nature physically – as a climber – and creatively – as a photographer and an artist. All his paintings have been created on expeditions, and he sometimes uses natural pigments to paint an authentic portrayal of the ravishing landscapes he finds on his adventures.

Ozturk is the receiver of the 2013 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year for “his combination of cutting-edge first ascents and visual storytelling. ” Thanks to his free spirit and artistic soul, Ozturk has immortalized his travels and shared them with us.
