It was November 9th, 1989 when the German officials finally allowed Communist East Germany residents to cross over to West Berlin and West Germany, and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the event, artist Patrick Shearn created an installation that represents the hopes of 30,000 people.

Visions in Motion was available for visitors from November 4th through 10th right in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. According to a statement from Poetic Kinetics, “the artwork’s rectangular shape conjures the form of the wall; but instead of a heavy, impenetrable border, the form takes flight.” The installation covered 20,000 square feet and a quarter of 120,000 fabric ribbons had hand-written messages on them. The messages were collected during several months before the display.
