Based in Cyprus, Hayati’nin Evreni creates mashups based on famous paintings. Immersed in our universe, these canvases of classical painting rub against our universe full of technology, internet, characters of pop culture, memes and scenes of everyday life.

The  Turkish butcher and chef “Salt Bae” invites himself to the table of the Last Supper (1498), The Scream of Edvard Munch (1893) wanders in the Upside Down of Stranger Things, a painting of Caravaggio receives the visit of the dentist Deadpool while Vincent van Gogh, Johannes Vermeer, and Leonardo da Vinci revisit the famous even called “Distracted boyfriend”.

A real reinterpretation of classical masterpieces and a reappropriation of their symbolism and space.

Shusaku Takaoka is a graphic designer from Japan who has become popular with his witty and surprising illustrations that combine classic paintings and gritty urban scenes. Iconic ancient, Baroque and Modernist objects of art like Mona Lisa, Van Gogh, and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring are masterfully merged with high fashion and hipster-ish looks that look not out of place in any contemporary metropolis.

Takaoka also loves to mix scenes from legendary films into his mashups, especially Tarantino pictures such as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs etc. In the current postmodern world this part ironic, part respectful homages to those icons of the popular culture start to live a life of their own and inspire people to view art from a totally different lens.
