]]> Gavin Snider is a Brooklyn-based artist whose sketches and murals perfectly capture the vibe of New York City. Snider is always on the go, traveling among the city’s boroughs to catch the heart of the city onto paper. He finds inspiration in unusual places; places that most people walk past without paying much attention.

His unique style helps him create dream-like art that’s sometimes vague, but it perfectly captures the essence of what’s in front of him. From skyline view from his neighborhood to iconic buildings in Manhattan and less-known corners of the city, Snider turns this big metropolis into colorful sketches that warm anybody’s heart.

“I’m an artist, illustrator and designer based in Brooklyn, NY. I draw things that are worth remembering,” Snider writes on his website. “From sketches to large-scale murals, My artwork helps public and private clients share what is important to them, communicate their ideas, and celebrate what makes them unique.”

I met a lot of people walking down Broadway on a Friday afternoon. A tall tourist with a large camera and a zoom lens. "Can I make a picture?" A woman in a fur-lined coat holding two envelopes. "I hate to bother you but can I use your pen? I'm on my way to mail these letters and forgot to write the zip code on them.” I was drawing the Manhattan Savings Institute. It was built on the site of the biggest bank heist in U.S. history, a ninety-one million dollar job back in October of 1878. It was home to Bill Murray’s character in Ghostbusters. A man taking long strides and carrying a big backpack stopped for a while longer. “Oh, that's nice. I'm an artist too." He pulled out a notebook and showed me drawings of superheroes, Batman and Catwoman in ink and colored pencil, jumping off the page in shimmering detail. A serendipitous commission took me to one of my favorite bars in the city. The Local occupies a tiny storefront on a perfect stretch of Sullivan Street. I guess it used to be a coffee shop. I don't make it there often, but every time I do it's special. The last time I stopped in it was snowing. A hockey player was writing Christmas cards to his mother. A bartender told us about the five borough food tours he gives from his minivan. A Hungarian opera singer sang an aria and the entire bar went silent. On a gloomy afternoon in a new year, I walked up Broadway looking for something to draw. Restless and uninspired, I passed the buskers in Washington Square Park and cut over to the West Village. Half a mile up Seventh Avenue I saw the former National Maritime Union Headquarters, looking like a ship in the harbor. Windows like portholes. Elevators like smokestacks. I didn’t know it when I was drawing, but sailors would come here to get their assignments on merchant ships leaving New York. The union president Joseph Curran called it “the box in which the Guggenheim came.” It was getting colder in the late afternoon. Half the facade was in shadow. A few trees lit up with sad Christmas lights. The glass block at the base of the building let off a soft glow.
