Julia Rothman’s Illustrations Make Finances More Fun

Illustrator Julia Rothman works together with writer Shaina Feinberg to create fun illustrations that make the finance world more relatable and fun for everyone. The two of them launched a new illustrated column in The New York Times last fall called Scratch, where they publish financial examples through human interest stories.

Thanks again to the families who spoke to us. @shainafeinberg and I wish we could have had five pages to tell the full stories we heard. It’s always a challenge to pull a few sentences from these long interviews we do. Some doctors on twitter are tagging me in a conversation about our piece and how these costs seem too low – that people usually have to pay way more. Ugh. I’m sorry for anyone struggling with this process right now and wish you the very best. Xo

Rothman’s art reveals the truth behind some of the most interesting stories regarding the cost of things. Her previous stories included the cost of opening a coffee shop, having a baby through IVF, and living in NYC as a drag queen.

“I remember that word being a really big shock to me. It felt like there should be another word between fertility and infertility.” — For our latest Scratch column, we talked to five families who went through successful IVF treatment and what it cost them. This was really eye-opening for me and there were a couple moments I teared up while in the interviews. Thank you to the families who were willing to open up about their journeys with us. New Year’s resolutions got us thinking about money managing. Most Americans are in a lot of debt. It was a huge exciting thing when I finally paid off my student loan a couple years ago. @shainafeinberg and I wanted to talk to people about their debt for our latest Scratch column so we went to the streets. But it wasn’t so easy. Nobody wanted to talk to us! We stood in the cold for a long time waving and asking people to talk to us. So many heard the topic and said they were sorry, that it wasn’t something they wanted to talk about. Thankfully we got nine people to share their debt with us and what they are doing to get through it. And I made it look like they were on a fun game show. Link in bio! Do you have debt?
