]]>We already told you the story how Wegman adopted his first Weimaraner in the 70s, a German dog with a gray coat and clear blue eyes called Man Ray; the dog became a source of inspiration for the artist who created a true cult to him in his art. From painting to photography to video, Man Ray has inspired Wegman’s best-known works, including his famous dog portraits.
Now, Wegman collaborated with the MTA Arts & Design which aims to promote art in the New York subway. The Stationary Figures project presents a series of mosaics inspired by his famous dog portraits. Whether wearing a flannel shirt or a shiny raincoat, each dog is inspired by the looks and attitudes of New Yorkers. For the realization of the project, Wegman relied on Mayer’sche Hofkunstanstalt — Mayer of Munich, a historic glass and mosaic workshop.
These 11 paintings now adorn the walls of 23rd Street subway station and embellish the daily journey of millions of New York citizens.
