]]> Israeli industrial designer Yael Akirav uses 3-D printing techniques and textiles to create origami light fixtures. They can expand and collapse depending on the user’s needs and wants and be displayed open or folded.

Origami is the art of paper folding, especially popular in Japan where it originates from. Today, the word “origami” is used for all paper folding practices, whether they are connected to the original Japanese art or not.

When pulled slowly, the light gradually turns on. It can be turned off by compressing the object into its original position. Akirav is a recent graduate at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, the Industrial Design Department. That’s where she was first introduced to 3-D printing and she kept thinking about ways to utilize this technology into everyday life.

conductive origami A series of lighting fixtures 3D printed directly onto textiles. Rigid printing on textile allows the creation of complex elements. When the printed material conducts electricity, the intersections that stem from the art of origami present a new opportunity – turning on the light by contracting and stretching the structure.
