Artist’s Vibrant Linocut Prints Highlight The Beauty of Woodlands

Linocut is a printmaking technique in which a sheet of linoleum is used for a relief surface. UK-based artist Alexandra Buckle is an expert and uses a process called reduction linocut – a technique to create a multiple color linocut print from a single tile.

“I favour the ‘reduction’ process, which involves cutting and printing each layer of colour from the same block of lino in order to build up an image,” she wrote on Artfinder. The entire process must be printed in one go as you can’t go back to print more once you have carved into the block for the next layer.

Most of her linocuts are woodland themed as she finds them a constant source of inspiration. But she also enjoys watery scenes, flowers, and summer fields as themes for her artworks.

“I enjoy woodland walks and countryside views, marvelling at the constant changes in light, weather and season. I get excited by interesting light and shadow and engaging colour palettes, then take pleasure in translating these scenic discoveries into linocuts.”
