Giant Swan Uses Virtual Reality as His Favorite Medium

Giant Swan describes himself as a Melbourne-based virtual reality painter and sculptor who thinks that exploring the forests and mountains and playing video games had a huge role in becoming an artist. When he first tried virtual reality at his friend’s birthday party back in 2017, he knew that he had to to make his own.

“I recreated The Smith Streed Band’s album art to one of my favorite songs of theirs they had just played, and somehow they saw it,” the artist shared in an interview for Ballpit and added that the band would commission him to make art for them to play at in front of that year’s Falls festival.

This project made him think about his future. He gave up his office desk job and began his career as an artist.

“Virtual reality is my favorite medium. As a new medium, the things I’m doing now, I wouldn’t have dreamed of doing a year ago. The ability to capture the very organic movement of yourself and impose it on technology in new and interesting ways is incredibly rewarding,” Swan explained.
