Gill Button’s Paintings are in Direct Dialogue With the Fashion World

Gill Button has more or less always known she wanted to be an artist. “As the story with most artists goes, I drew incessantly from the time I could pick up a crayon,” she recalled in an interview with The Corner. “I would go through paper at a ridiculous rate and, when it ran out, I’d draw on the backs, cut them up, make collages and so on!”

By the age of 14, her crush with the art world had turned into a full-blown obsession. “I devoured every art book at my local library and would take the train to London in order to see as many exhibitions as possible, I just couldn’t get enough,” said the UK-based painter.

With that much creative drive, it makes sense that her rise to fame was almost immediate. Having carved herself a niche in the fashion world, her paintings center around fashion icons, painted in strong brush strokes and bold colors. And with almost 90k followers on Instagram, social media has become Button’s calling card.

“Instagram is the only platform I use,” she stressed. “I think, for creatives, Instagram is still by far the most accessible way to post your work and view that of others.” Button should know. Her online presence has lead to collaborations with fashion brands like Gucci and Dries van Noten.
