Jeanette Getrost’s Illustrations Took the Fashion World by Storm

Jeanette Getrost has a lot to live up to. Named by Vogue as one of the fashion industry’s most in-demand illustrators, she has amassed more than 100k fans on Instagram alone, partnering with brands ranging from Chanel and Dior to Esteé Lauder and Tiffany & Co.

But like most creatives, her rise to prominence was slow and required much work and effort. And when she started out, she didn’t even know that fashion illustration was a thing. “I assumed that you could either be a designer or a model,” Getrost told Entrepreneur. “I didn’t really understand the industry, so I would just draw clothing a lot.”

It wasn’t until she opened a designated Instagram account that things really took off. “I wrote in my bio that I was a fashion illustrator, even though I hadn’t been hired at that point as an illustrator,” she admitted. “Pretty soon after, I started getting inquiries — just for small gigs, illustrations for someone’s website they were launching, things like that.”

According to Getrost, 85 percent of the inquiries she gets come from people seeing her work on Instagram – proving once and for all that in this day and age, it really is all about branding (though it doesn’t hurt to be talented as well). Take note!
