Kate Jarvik Birch’s Retro Paintings Put Food Front and Center

Many painters kick off their artistic journey by painting still objects before shifting their attention elsewhere, but not Kate Jarvik Birch. She made a name for herself with her retro paintings of everyday objects that put food front and center.

Birch is an artist from Salt Lake City, Utah, who’s been passionate about art since childhood and decided to pursue it more seriously during her time at the University of Utah. She came there with the goal of studying elementary education but eventually decided to change her major to painting and drawing.

Many of Birch’s paintings are inspired by food, and that’s not a coincidence. She’s a huge believer that beauty can be found in the most mundane of things, and food just happens to fall under that category.

“I’m one of those people who find beauty pretty much everywhere she looks, so it’s kind of a no-brainer that I often find myself painting everyday objects… These are the objects that surround us, and we often don’t realize how much significance they have in our lives,” she told Strathmore Artist.

Birch’s paintings helped her attract quite a following on social media, with over 250,000 followers on Instagram alone. She also worked with many major brands over the years and contributed to several popular movies and TV shows, including Glee and Transparent.
