Scientific illustrations of animals found in books, encyclopedias, and journals help us learn more about wildlife. They explain the anatomy of animals through colorful drawings and highlight their most important features. Artist Tim Andraka is trying to do the same with his series of illustrations titled “Natural History Collection,” with one distinguishable difference: the science behind his work is made up.

Andraka’s illustrations feature drawings of animals with unexpected and surreal twists. For example, he imagines that Toucans’ big, colorful beaks grow on trees, and the bird simply picks them up once they fall to the ground.

In another illustration, he imagines Armadillo as an opossum who got himself armor.

In a recent chat with Metal Magazine, Andraka shared that there is no specific message he aims to convey with his surreal works, although he does enjoy learning how people interpret them.

“Many of the ideas are just something I thought was weird, unsettling or silly and wanted to share. I also enjoy seeing how different people interpret each piece. Some people resonate with specific animals or objects that carry on a meaning of their own,” Andraka explained.

Nina Stajner’s Instagram page lies in a soft, tender corner of the internet (and these days, we’re doing our best to find these sheltered corners amidst the chaos). A freelance illustrator and graphic designer, her work features woodland critters painted in soft, earthy colors. It’s the kind of illustrations you’d want printed on your children’s’ blankets, and luckily, Stajner’s work is indeed featured on textiles, amongst other materials.

Apart from textiles, her illustrations can be found on products like enamel pins, notebooks, coloring books, notepads, and greeting cards, with her clients including brands like Papyrus, Little Blue Nest, Craft Consortium, Lilipinso, and Lake Coloring.

“Most of my work is drawn by hand the old-school way, and painted patiently with watercolors and gouache,” she shared with Society6’s blog. “First layers are quite relaxed, but at the end I somehow find the patience to make all the tiny details and make my characters come to life. I do all the repeat patterns digitally in Photoshop or Illustrator.”

According to Stajner, her inspiration comes from the world around her. “While I work, I love to stylize them, make them more simple and less realistic,” she notes. “But then I want to add so many details that they appear alive again. Like they actually exist somewhere in the world. Oh, what a happy place that would be.”

We highly recommend you follow her on Instagram.

Over the years, we’ve covered many illustrators inspired directly by nature—an inspiration source that’s also prevalent in George Tonks’ illustrations. Zooming in on the animal kingdom, Tonk draws bears, dogs, birds, and even dinosaurs, using bright colors and striking compositions.

His illustrations have a tongue-in-cheek quality to them, that’s partly due to their exaggerated features – features like big eyes and extra sharp teeth. As such, his animals would make great cartoon characters. They also make great prints, which Tonks sells on his Etsy store.

According to Tonks, his work process includes a lot of sketching beforehand. His sketches are smaller than the final pieces, allowing him some freedom to work out a composition, shape, proportions, silhouette, and everything else that goes into character illustration.

He then works digitally, using ProCreate, to create his final piece, adding texture and color. Understanding the animals’ anatomy is also important— a practice he learned through animal observations, as well as studying other illustrators.

Below you’ll find some of his delightful pieces.

Leigh Ellexson’s illustration style was achieved through much trial and error. A self-taught creative, she taught herself everything she needed to know and now works in illustration full time, with her unique style making quite the splash both on Instagram and YouTube.

“I transferred art schools once and dropped out twice,” she admitted in a piece she wrote on her website, adding that school wasn’t for her. “There are TONS of benefits of going to art school such as networking, being able to learn and try expensive equipment + supplies, a concentrated community of artists, art outreach programs, among many other things,” she added. “I wasn’t taking advantage of what it had to offer so I decided to spend my money elsewhere and continuing practicing solo.”

But when it comes to her style, she admits its evolving and changing all the time. “I see style as a fluid thing,” she writes. “I find that what helped me hone in on a style as an artist was taking a lot of time to improve my skills,” she added, explaining that she took on the 365 project, drawing every single day for a year.

“I was creating so much the year I did that project that I was able to see my improvements month to month and even week to week. It’s not something everyone has time for but there’s not a better way to find yourself as an artist than making work.”

Now she passes her knowledge onto others, documenting her day to day on her social media pages, and relaying her tips and tricks. A sold influencer you’d want to follow to get your creative juices flowing.

Does Chow Hon Lam’s name sounds familiar? Well, that might be because this self-taught artist and illustrator is best known for being one of the creators of a well-known comic called Tu and Ted. But the Malaysia-based Lam works on his own projects, as well.

Almost a decade ago, he created a project titled Flying Mouse 365 where he would release one illustration per day for an entire year. Recently, he started working on a new solo series of illustrations where he imagines the daily life of cute and funny animals.

“I used my imagination to create an animal daily life illustrations, I always believe animals also have their daily life like us,” the artist shared on Bored Panda. “They may have work, hobby, lover, or even a dream, like us.”
