]]> Australia-based photographer SJ Allen shows us that you don’t have to be on the road all the time to be able to create beautiful nature and wildlife photographer. This busy mom decided to turn her backyard into a studio instead.

“I’ve long had a dream to be a wildlife and nature photographer skipping around on Antarctic icebergs and snapping exotic species hidden deep in forests,” she says. “However, when I became a mum I had to face up the fact that I not only didn’t have the luxury of traveling to those places, but I often only had an hour or two at difficult times of the day to shoot like in the midday sun. So I decided to change my front and back yards to create the type of images I wanted to shoot.”

In order to attract local bees and birds, she planted many native Australian plants. You can see her work below.

Cabbage White Butterfly (Pieris rapae) on an Onion Weed (Nothoscordum inodorum). Sadly both these species are total pests. The butterfly is an introduced species with a voracious caterpillar will do serious damage to veggies in the brassica family. And the plant is a noxious weed and very hard to remove from a lawn or garden once it takes hold. Spring is definitely in the air now. All the bugs that were gone for winter are out and about. I grew up calling this one a "ladybug", but read just now that entomologists prefer to call them "ladybirds" as they're not true bugs at all, but part of the Coccinellidae family instead. Female King Parrot (Alisterus scapularis) portrait. These stunning birds are pretty common though it seems that 90% of the time I only end up seeing the females. Superb Fairy Wren (Malurus cyaneus) singing his little heart out. It MUST be spring! I've wanted to get a close-up shot of one of these lovely little birds for ages and have actually gone to places where I know they are specifically for that purpose yet to no avail. Grevillea cultivar 'Misty Pink' – I've written earlier in my feed about how I've designed my garden to bring in birds and other wildlife, but I also designed it to create specific photographs. Having in the past spent tons of time traveling to photogenic locations, once we owned a house, I figured it made a lot of sense to create my own. The result is certainly a bit wild and nothing like a display garden, but that appeals to me (and the wildlife). Misty Pink was one of the first plants I put in specifically for the camera. It's a lovely plant generally and flowers well throughout the year, but what made it a must-have for me was the colours of the soft pink against the grey-green foliage. Plus, that leaf shape is a winner. This is probably a bit unusual for a grevillea shot, but I liked the moodiness and the shapes. Finally! A male King Parrot! For the last few years, I've seen a lot of these birds (Alisterus scapularis), but when I've had my camera with me, it's strangely only been the females around. They're very pretty too, but lacking the red head, they're not quite as dramatic. It was great to finally get a clear shot of a male eating seeds near Lake Parramatta. He was a little wary of me, but I had my long lens and those seeds must have been really good – once he figured I wasn't a threat, he went straight back to munching. Happy New Year! . This little Superb Fairy Wren (Malurus cyaneus) was shy as anything hopping around in the open and I couldn't get a good shot. Then he jumped into a bush and I guess he felt he was well-hidden as he remained totally unconcerned when I got closer and started shooting through the leaves. Tiny female Common Lynx Spider (Oxyopes quadrifasciatus) hanging out on some Salvia flowers hoping for a meal to come along. I had a wonderful day photographing at Lane Cove National Park last Thursday and this Blue Triangle Butterfly (Graphium sarpedon choredon) was the highlight. I've seen these lovely insects in my own garden too, but they've always been moving too fast for me to get a good shot. Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) in the Jacaranda tree in front of our house. This is another happy shot for me as he's up there waiting for his turn to feed off the grevilleas I've put into our garden. The last few years I haven't had much time to get to the best places in Sydney for photography (and definitely none to go overseas to exotic destinations!). So as I mentioned in a previous post I decided to try and make over my front and back yards to create a 'photographer's garden'. I put in plants I love the look of and also a ton like the grevilleas to encourage wildlife to visit. This is an old shot of a scorcher of a day (more than 40 degrees) when I was watering the garden at midday. Not the best move, of course, as the water evaporates fast, but there were a few plants that weren't going to make it until evening. As soon as I started these Common Paper Wasps (Polistes humilis) flew down and started drinking the water drops. They must have been super-thirsty! ]]> The Alps are not only Europe’s most extensive mountain range system, but they are also a place of magical beauty where you can see some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth. The Vienna-based photographer and software engineer Lukas Furlan had a chance to witness this beauty during several family trips and capture some amazing landscape photos in the process.

Wanting to offer social media users a unique insight into the inspiring scenery of the Alps, Furlan recently shared some of these photos with social media users, posting them on Instagram and Behance.

“Landscape photography is a great motivation to discover new places and to get out of your comfort zone,” Furlan says about his work. “My connection to the mountains goes way back, and when I started with landscape photography, I had the perfect playground right on the doorstep.”

Happy New Year! . This little Superb Fairy Wren (Malurus cyaneus) was shy as anything hopping around in the open and I couldn't get a good shot. Then he jumped into a bush and I guess he felt he was well-hidden as he remained totally unconcerned when I got closer and started shooting through the leaves. Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius) in a tree in Rookwood Cemetery in the fading evening sunlight. I've lived in Australia more than half my life and yet the vivid colours of the parrots down here still blow me away – especially these hugely colourful little guys. Tiny female Common Lynx Spider (Oxyopes quadrifasciatus) hanging out on some Salvia flowers hoping for a meal to come along. They're very small and as I just learned now they're called Lynx spiders as they apparently chase down their prey like little wild cats. I had a wonderful day photographing at Lane Cove National Park last Thursday and this Blue Triangle Butterfly (Graphium sarpedon choredon) was the highlight. I've seen these lovely insects in my own garden too, but they've always been moving too fast for me to get a good shot. Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) in the Jacaranda tree in front of our house. This is another happy shot for me as he's up there waiting for his turn to feed off the grevilleas I've put into our garden. The last few years I haven't had much time to get to the best places in Sydney for photography (and definitely none to go overseas to exotic destinations!). So as I mentioned in a previous post I decided to try and make over my front and back yards to create a 'photographer's garden'. I put in plants I love the look of and also a ton like the grevilleas to encourage wildlife to visit. This is an old shot of a scorcher of a day (more than 40 degrees) when I was watering the garden at midday. Not the best move, of course, as the water evaporates fast, but there were a few plants that weren't going to make it until evening. As soon as I started these Common Paper Wasps (Polistes humilis) flew down and started drinking the water drops. They must have been super-thirsty! ]]> The Alps are not only Europe’s most extensive mountain range system, but they are also a place of magical beauty where you can see some of the most breathtaking landscapes on Earth. The Vienna-based photographer and software engineer Lukas Furlan had a chance to witness this beauty during several family trips and capture some amazing landscape photos in the process.

Wanting to offer social media users a unique insight into the inspiring scenery of the Alps, Furlan recently shared some of these photos with social media users, posting them on Instagram and Behance.

“Landscape photography is a great motivation to discover new places and to get out of your comfort zone,” Furlan says about his work. “My connection to the mountains goes way back, and when I started with landscape photography, I had the perfect playground right on the doorstep.”
