Marianne is a Copenhagen-based artist. She studied fashion design at The School of Design at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1995. Since then, she’s been working with some of the leading magazines and fashion houses in the world and has slowly gravitated away from fashion and towards are.

Marianne describes herself as a slow art advocate, which means her works cane take hours and hours, though she doesn’t keep count. Her bouquets are all made by hand, each petal-shaped and put into place, with no patterns or templates to guide her. She doesn’t plan anything, not even what sort of paper to use, she uses what’s available to her, and tries to focus on the creative process rather than on the design and planning aspects of her work.

Marriane draws inspiration from her childhood in the Danish countryside. Many of her installations refer to Danish folk art, which is in its own turn inspired by nature. These floral installations have been Marriane’s focus for the past five years, and she doesn’t mean to stop anytime soon. She shares her work in her Instagram account, where we can also enjoy her weird, beautiful creations.

Emily Paluska’s paper flowers might be delicate, but as opposed to the real thing – they’re meant to last. According to Paluska, flowers are the sort of natural glue that keeps us connected to where we come from and where we’re going.

With flowers being a constant theme throughout her work (with the occasional mushroom and fern leaf), her inspiration naturally comes from the outdoors – through walks around her neighborhood and visits to gardens. “Some of the best gardens I’ve ever seen are in Capitol Hill,” she told Ballpitmag. “I also have easy access to the National Botanic Garden, the Arboretum and I have family in Pennsylvania where I can go to Longwood Gardens a few times a year. Seeing a flower in real life is what triggers my creativity and desire to recreate it in paper.”

But funnily enough, her paper art obsession began by mere chance. “I had seen paper flowers sporadically online and thought it might be a fun thing to try,” she explained on her website. “I had no idea what I was doing but I sat on the floor of my bedroom watching videos and looking at pictures of plants, learning as I went.”

“After being a lifetime appreciator of the arts, I never considered myself an artist,” she says. “I used to think an artist was only someone that could paint or draw. I know now that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The creative world is vast and there is room for everyone.”
