Sometimes, it takes the simplest of things to remind you that life, in all its complexity, is worth living. In the case of print and pattern designer Elizabeth Olwen, all it takes is a pretty pattern. “I think it’s so important to have reminders of all the beauty in the world,” she remarked once in an interview with the Spoonflower blog. “I really do get satisfaction from beautiful design and I think it has the power to lift people up, like a bright floral umbrella on a rainy day.”

Her illustrated patterns hold the perfect balance between sophistication and playfulness, adding a colorful twist to interior design. Born in Canada and based in Portugal, her work is greatly inspired by the world around her—from the beautiful forests of Ontario, to the pastel colors and tiles of Lisbon, to her cherished and plentiful travels abroad, and her own journey of self-exploration toward wholeheartedness.

Her highly considered patterns and illustrations are assembled, piece by piece, creating an altogether unique compilation of colors and shapes, with nature being a constant theme throughout her work. “I love flowers and leaves and trees and it never ceases to amaze me how each one is so unique,” says Olwen. “I find that idea so inspiring.”

Her patterns are printed on products from decor to paper to fabric to bedding. All with the aim to keep creativity alive in our daily lives and find joy in visual beauty.

Charlotte Jade invites you to bring the beauty of the outside world inside your home, through her hand-drawn patterns, featured on an array of products as well as wallpapers. Based on her love of nature, texture, and pattern, Jade’s business (launched in 2015), celebrates the richness of shapes and forms found in our natural environments.

Her design collections are available on wallpaper, textiles, upholstery fabrics, furniture, cushions, ceramic tiles, and flooring, with all products printed and made in the UK. “I hand draw all my designs, which creates quite a personal feel to my designs,” she noted in an interview with Jung Katz. “I then apply color (which is generally quite bold) and edit these hand-drawn images digitally using photoshop.”

Clearly inspired by the natural world, both flora and fauna, Jade is also very much inspired by fashion and likes incorporating current trends in her work. Her designs are also based around geometric prints, making for a striking juxtaposition between organic and manmade forms.

“My work is quite detailed and I generally use a pencil to create my patterns,” she explains, adding that she does, however, enjoy combining pencil and paint. “I feel these two mediums create quite unique pattern designs,” she says. Scroll down to see some of her patterns in action.
