NASA astronaut Jessica U. Meir has too many accolades to mention. A Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Brown University, as well as a Master of Science in Space Studies from the International Space University, and a Doctorate in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UCSD), her achievements include being par of the first all-female spacewalk in history.

Together with Christina Koch, the two spacewalked for seven hours and 17 minutes in total. Currently working onboard the International Space Station on her first spaceflight as part of Expedition 61 and 62, she has also participated in research flights on NASA’s reduced gravity aircraft and served as an aquanaut in an underwater habitat for NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO).

“For me, coming up here, it just was the most amazing experience of my life, coming to the International Space Station, something that I had dreamed about since I was a kid,” she remarked in an interview with wbur. “And let me tell you, I thought it would be amazing. I knew it would be amazing. It is even far, far, far more incredible and impressive than I ever imagined. And that’s saying a lot.”

Luckily for us, we get to admire her magnificent work, as well as her travels into space, from the comfort of our home – whilst scrolling through her official Instagram page. With more than 150k followers, you’d want to join in. It’s not every day that you get to follow an astronaut around.

We all have special glasses and plates that we only use during big holidays with friends and family, special occasions or with someone special. They usually look amazing and we are terrified that the glass may fall and break, because it’s so pretty and unique for us. But no matter how exquisite your glasses are, they’re no match for these galaxy sake cups.

Made by Hiromi Sato, a Japanese artist, these cups hide an entire universe in them that comes to life when they’re filled with transparent liquid. Each cup is a story for itself – they are all made out of stainless steel, but they are all painted by hand; that’s why all of these sake cups have their own unique design. To achieve this, Sato uses a special paint, then he adds a coat of lacquer and gold dust to make them shine. With this technique, the artist manages to create a mini universe that shines when you pour transparent or semi-transparent liquid in it. You can order them from Sato’s website and have a one-of-a-kind set that you can use with your friends and family.

If this planet is getting small for you, and if Instagram is getting a bit boring with the duck selfies and the fashion influencers, let’s see what’s going on out of this sphere… Literally.

Believe it or not, this Instagram account shows us un-retouched, just a little bit resized pictures of Mars! Yes, the planet. Not the candy. The Mars Science Laboratory along with the Curiosity rover decided to use Instagram as an easy and accessible platform to share all of the images they have taken on Mars so far.

Аt first glance they might look unreal, they might look as if they are a set of some new Hollywood movie, or in some cases you might be just a little bit skeptical or even cynical, proclaiming them as: meh, nothing but rocks and sand.

But, when you think about it, it’s really out-of-this-world crazy to just imagine how far Mars actually is, and how those grey rocks have never been touched by humanity before. In each of their descriptions they give details about when the picture was taken, why was it taken, and what are their plans for that specific region of Mars.  So, if you are curious about the future discoveries done on Mars, this might be the perfect IG account to follow, starting today.

For as long as we can remember, Hollywood has had a fascination with the apocalypse, with movies varying from Stanley Kubrick’s science fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey to Zombie horrors such as I Am Legend.

But for American artist, Scott Listfield, the apocalypse is explored through a different medium: painting. His eerie paintings feature a lone exploratory astronaut lost in a landscape cluttered with pop culture icons, corporate logos, and tongue-in-cheek science fiction references.

His lonesome astronaut doesn’t explore a distant, unimagined future, but delves into the present – walking through deserted malls and desolated in-and-outs.

“A surprising amount of my young life happened in or around malls, department stores, and shopping centers,” explained the artist in an interview for Creative Boom. “But these physical spaces – the stores, buildings, signs, logos, loading docks, parking lots, and atrium fountains – are largely fading away… Before they’re gone entirely, I wanted to make some paintings about them.”

Check out some of his apocalyptic art in the gallery below.

Two years ago I had a show at @galleries1988 called FRANCHISE, where I made a whole series of paintings about our love of fast food chains, pizza places, and coffee shops. In particular I was thinking about places that had a specific regional ties, like In N' Out, Waffle House, and Tim Horton's, and about how they have become deeply intertwined with our sense of where we come from, along with a nostalgia for our childhood, that goes well beyond a simple love for greasy things. Believe it or not, I was actually a bit nervous whether you guys would like those paintings – I mean, did anyone really want a painting of a White Castle? Well the resounding answer was yes. It's been one of my most popular shows, and like with all popular things, we green lit a sequel. I'd like to invite you to join me at Gallery 1988 this Friday, January 11th from 7-9pm for the opening of FRANCHISE TOO. This time around, instead of strictly focussing on fast food, I spent a lot of time considering the dying art of going to the mall. Growing up in the 80's and 90's, that's what we did. Almost every weekend. We browsed CDs, cassettes, and vinyl, hung out in the food court, got chased out of department stores, rented videos, shopped for robots at RadioShack, grabbed a cookie or a frozen yogurt or whatever the hell an Orange Julius is. A surprising amount of my young life happened in or around malls, department stores, and shopping centers. But these physical spaces – the stores, buildings, signs, logos, loading docks, parking lots, and atrium fountains – are largely fading away. Along with the lifestyle we built around them. Many have been torn down, some have been repurposed, and others were just left to rot away. The last relics of a once golden age of shopping plazas. Before they're gone entirely, I wanted to make some paintings about them. Come check them out at FRANCHISE TOO. . . . #scottlistfield #gallery1988 #franchise #franchisetoo #blockbuster
