]]>With a whopping 260k followers on Instagram, she’s sort of a celebrity when it comes to stick-n-poke tattoos. A self-taught tattoo artist (but aren’t they all?), most of her early clients had never even heard of stick-n-poke – a traditional form of body art that involves using a sharp point and some ink. “I always liked that it’s a lowbrow art form,” observed Compton in an interview with Amadeus.
According to Kartomten, she gave and received her first tattoo when she and her friend hand-poked each other’s fingers. “I started with friends at home in San Francisco,” she recalled. “We wanted to do it then and there, and I had sewing needles and India ink. I became a professional over a long period of time.”
Working out of Saved Tattoo in LA’s Arts District, these days Compton only takes bookings a month in advance. “I’ve never wanted recognition,” she admits, “which is why tattooing is great because it’s for someone else.”

]]>Michigan-based Thomas Spring also known as Bubba comes from an artistic family, his father is a musician and drummer, whilst his mother is a fine art and fantasy photographer, so his passion for art came naturally.
“Along with making comics and face painting, I think tattoos are another way for him to create by also making other people happy,” Thomas’s mother Katie Eklund said in an interview with Bored Panda.
“One day, he came home from school and said, ‘Mom can I give you a tattoo?’ I agreed. And then we set up a station for him with gel pens and a tip jar, where he charged me 50 cents for each tattoo I got. Then his siblings all wanted one.”
After she made a post about her son’s work, the reaction from people was more than amazing. From tattoo artists wanting to collaborate with him, to kind people writing him letters and supporting his passion.

]]>In an interview with Inked Magazine, Kozokaro told the story of how his career started when one of his friends bought the cheapest machine from eBay and let him try it out. His friend was his first client and later on, he started offering free tattoos to everyone he knew.
“I tried to find a way to express my classical painting knowledge within a size that could fit people who can’t commit for a sleeve or big work,” the artist explained why he mostly does micro tattoos. “I try to design as minimalistically as possible. In design, I believe that less is more,” he added.
Kozokaro is now part of Bang Bang Tattoo, a prestigious tattoo studio where celebrities such as Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Miley Cyrus come to get inked.

]]>Now, with more than 100k followers on Instagram people are standing in line to get tattoed by the master of hand-poking, known online as “Slower Black”.
“When clients come in, I already have a good idea of what they want, because at that point we’ll have already emailed or talked about it over the phone,” she says. “Then I draw up the design and get the A-OK from the client before making a stencil. Once the stencil is made, I put it onto the person’s skin, and we decide on a placement that they like. Then we make it happen. The setup is clean and sterile, and everything is the same setup as it is with a machine, except for the tools I’m using.”
A palm-sized tattoo takes between 1-2 hours, a hand-sized one takes 3 hours but back pieces can take up until 40 hours. Judging by the finished result, the struggle is well worth it:

]]>He uses dot work to create a 3D shading effect, which can be achieved only with this unique technique. The illustrations are most often monochrome or with a simple use of colour. One could say he mixes the 19th-century pointillism with an early 20th-century surrealism. He usually draws hybrid animals or other elements from nature, but makes great use of everyday objects too. Sometimes these objects seem incredibly real and almost alive, and this is accomplished by the powerful use of contrast.
His tattoos look wonderful on both men and women, and all of them tell cool stories or symbolize powerful concepts.
Though he’s being followed by 112k people on Instagram, in public he prefers to remain anonymous. Except for samples of his work, there isn’t much to be found about him on the internet. He has managed not to mix his personal life with business and art, and it’s clear that it was only his work that brought him to the top.

]]>“I wear many tattoos myself. Mostly on my legs, because that’s when I started practicing before tattooing other people,” she shared in an interview in German with femtastics. “I do not wear tattoos on my arms or other obvious spots, as you can see. So I’m not the classic tattoo artist cliché. My grandmother knows nothing about my tattoos,” she added.
Inspired by Picasso’s inked portraits, Cocteau’s line drawings, and Jean Arp’s use of organic shapes, the Berlin-based tattoo artist uses thin black lines to create minimal surrealist works. “My drawings are never too serious or boring,” she stressed. “At least I hope so. I would call my style surrealistic.”
“I like to paint vases or hands. Basically, I try to combine different, mostly contradictory things in one picture. That result is always exciting. But faces are my absolute favorite motif,” she added. Whatever her creations are, they always maintain and an element of the absurd.

Every day I’m encouraged by the objective of simplifying each image as much as possible and making it clear and intuitive using only few black lines. But both black lines and colors are fundamental: the colors tell what the black lines can’t do,” says the artist.

]]>“It’s a cute, personal, secret way to connect your sign and the universe to your body,” Knapik told Dazed & Confused Magazine. “I’m super into metaphysical things; astrology, crystals, setting your intentions, and I’ve been getting more into tarot. Really all of it relies on moon phases, seasons, planet position, and kind of thanking the universe for the things you already have, while also asking for things you may need in your life. So around the end of 2017, late one night AstroFrecks popped into my head,” she recalled.”
“Truth be told, I thought for sure I would post my first AstroFrecks picture on Instagram and a bigger artist with more followers would snatch it up and copy it, and I’d be left in the dust. But by some interweb miracle Bustle found it in under 24 hours. The day after that it was in Cosmo Australia. One of the things I was truly so happy about was that this was going to give cosmetic artists something new to offer and profit from. We pretty much work for ourselves, and drumming up business can be tough, so I felt so happy that people would have this new service to offer. More business, more money, everyone wins.”
“All my clients are so diverse,” she said. “All ages. Every kind of person you can think of, from many other states too. A lot of people love the astrology aspect, but I also get a lot of girls who want freckles because their moms or grandmas have them and they find them so beautiful but they naturally just never got them. I’ve heard back from my clients that their moms and grandmas look at their faces and say, ‘Oh my gosh they look just like mine!’ And that is the highest compliment I can think of.”

Her unique “trash tattoos”, as she calls them, have already gone viral, gaining a cult following on Instagram, where she regularly uploads pictures of happy customers with their new quirky tattoos.
Even though it may not seem like it, the young tattoo artist has been drawing her entire life and also works as a visual artist. In Helen’s case, what some people would call a complete and even offensive lack of talent, others embrace as a genuine style that’s kind of funny, kind of cute, and completely breaking the rules.
