For a very long time, our planet has been suffocating in plastic and trash which led to lots of contaminated waters, polluted air and beaches overcrowded with all kind of junk. But not so long ago, a new social challenge has appeared – the #Trashtag. This eco initiative went viral for about month ago thanks to social media.

#Trashtag is a great way to educate young people and raise awareness for our planet and the consequences of our actions. Through this challenge, people from all over the world started posting on their social media profiles such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Reddit their before and after photos of their surroundings that they’ve cleaned up. People even started teaming up so they can clean bigger areas, like whole beaches and hiking roads. This #Trashtag challenge has turned the whole world upside down on a good way, making everyone more responsible of their surrounding and aware that with a little effort we can change the world and make a brighter future.

#Trashtag is maybe the best eco initiative that gave unbelievable results in a short period of time and is an excellent example of how social media can make a positive change in the world.

Often times the internet is littered with hashtags that have no significant impact on the quality of life lived by humans, but #TrashTag is quite different. In last few days, #TrashTag has inspired and motivated lots of young people to create a picture of a dirty environment before they clean it and an after picture when they are done cleaning it, and the turnout has been shocking. Young people all over the world took up the challenge, bought boxes and garbage bags, and posted photos of themselves cleaning up their local parks, beaches, and wilderness areas.

The trend started March by a Facebook user, Byron Román, after he shared a photo of himself issuing a challenge to “bored teens” asking them to “Take a photo of an area that needs some cleaning or maintenance, then take a photo after you have done something about it, and post it.” And the rest is history, check them out below!
