The history of painting is as old as time, but unfortunately, time has its downsides when it comes to conservation. As time passes, paintings tend to collect dust and grime, the paint itself begins to crack, and what once were vibrant colors have faded into nothing. Thankfully, Julian Baumgartner can restore any old painting!

The Chicago-Based restorer works around the clock to restore old paintings to their former glory, using a painstaking process. Every painting is unique and requires special attention. Using the wrong material might end up harming the painting even more.

That’s why Baumgartner spent years studying painting and restoration. He learned the craft from his father, a famous restorer in his own right, and joined his studio when he finished his apprenticeship.

Restoration might sound boring, but it’s actually fascinating – seeing a painting get a total makeover and change before our eyes is quite mesmerizing! Luckily for us, Baumgartner is kind enough to share his process on social media, along with commentary explaining his every step.

We’re used to seeing old, yellowing paintings, covered in soot and grime, with the color barely showing. But by the time Baumgartner is done with a painting, it comes back to life with brilliant colors seen in a new light!

Another video of retouching the other major tear on the painting from yesterday. This one was a bit more straight forward and “easy” but still requires the same precision and attention to detail. This piece is privately owned and the client wanted full integration retouching (mimitec) such that the damage disappeared. The painting received an isolation of if-stable synthetic resin varnish and the retouching was executed in archival and reversible Maimeri restuaro paints mixed with a uv-stable synthetic resin (a different one than the varnish) to facilitate workability, body and UV stability. A final coat of the first resin varnish was applied after the work was complete. All of the materials used, ALL of the materials are archival and fully reversible so that if in the future Andy of this work needs to be removed (either during another conservation or because a different approach is desired) it can be done so without subjecting the painting to any risk of harm. All of this information is documented in photograph and reports presented to the client and stored in my database. This is one approach to addressing major damage on a painting, there are countless others each with benefits and drawbacks and it’s up to the conservator working on the painting to consult with the client and determine which approach will best address the damage and satisfy the client.

If you look at Philip Barlow’s paintings for the first time, you might think there’s something wrong with your eyes. But don’t worry, it’s not you – it’s the paintings.

Myopia is a very common vision problem around the world. People who suffer from it have trouble seeing objects that are placed at a distance – the farther the object is, the more blurred it will be.

That means that reading from the blackboard, seeing a friend wave from across the room, even enjoying views are all difficult, if not impossible. Most people use glasses to fix the problem, but once the glasses are off, the view gets blurred again.

That’s the feeling Barlow wanted to share with his audience. The paintings seem to display interesting scenes – friends on the beach, urban views – but you can’t really see that, because it’s all blurred. You might even have the urge to squint and focus to see the images better, just like people with myopia have to do.

But there’s still beauty in such a perspective. The unclear objects make room for us viewers to explore light, shapes, and colors without being distracted with what they represent. Take a look at some of his work – does the new perspective inspire you?

If you’re a visual type of person with a sensitive eye, this might catch your attention.

French visual artist and director, Quentin Deronzier, who is currently located in Tokyo, Japan, has been developing over the years a unique taste for electric color palettes. His background is in advertising, but business and marketing didn’t stop him from pursuing an artistic career. Today, he works almost exclusively on music-related projects, and has cooperated with big labels such as Universal, ULTRA, Sony Music and Interscope, and artists like Petit Biscuit, Ekali, Arkadin, Gryffin and many others.

He is a founder of WOVE studio, and best known for his surrealist and colorful album artworks and music videos. His work is a mix of conceptual messages, vibrant colors, and iridescent textures, and that’s what leaves the impression of a cozy mysteriousness and maybe some melancholy.

On Instagram, he is being followed by 28.1k people who admire his work and leave very enthusiastic comments on his photos. Many of his fans have printed and framed his works and proudly include them in their home decoration.

Below you can find some of his work, specifically the pictures from the ONLINE/OFFLINE series, each being consisted out of three magnificently redesigned photos.

Redmer Hoekstra is a visual artist and illustrator who graduated from the Art Academy in Zwolle and has been working in the illustration field since 2009. He has received significant recognition as a truly unique talent in the art community, known for producing curious works that intrigue the viewer. His modus operandi is creating imaginative realities by merging regular objects, people and animals.

As a child, he always had all kinds of theories about how the world works and weird things became his passion. He prefers drawing these emerging fantasies with fineliner pens that allow for a very refined shading. All images are black and white and usually filled with only two characters. These detailed illustrations are both amusing and a little disturbing, giving us clues about the sense of humor, observation skills and imagination of the artist.

From an owl with books for wings and giraffes with toothbrushes to a lizard with a computer keyboard, a handshake with fingers of animals and sneakers transformed into a sandwich, Hoekstra’s illustrations are delightfully bizarre combinations fused together in an ingenious way.

Take a deep dive into Redmer Hoekstra’s worldview in the gallery below!
