Dina Amin is an industrial designer who takes consumer products and breaks them apart to show exactly how much waste they generate. Using the stop-motion animation technique, she created a video called What’s Inside in which we see a number of old-school consumer products like a hairdryer and analog camera broke down to all the plastic, metal, and glass parts that were used to make them.

β€œOn Fridays I pick a random product, I disassemble it, examine it and make a stop motion story with its parts,” Amin wrote on her website. She believes that we’re so used to consuming that we forgot all the work that goes into making a single product. When we throw something out, we see it as one thing that goes to waste, while in facts it’s many small things that were used to make it.

Material designer and maker, Charlotte Kidger, is known for her sophisticated (and ethical!) approach to design. Her work includes furniture made from recycled industrial waste – polyurethane foam dust, a byproduct of 3D model making. Apart from being functional, her work also has a sculptural purpose, providing an industrial, if artistic, edge to interior design.

β€œIt began with a curiosity into how I could transform general everyday waste plastic into a new material through alternative processing methods,” she explained the idea behind her line of furniture in an interview with Upcyclist. β€œI shifted from looking at everyday plastics and decided to focus on industrial waste streams, as I hoped for scalability and more unexpected material inputs.”

With a hands-on approach, Kidger went on to explore the possibilities of using secondary raw materials to create innovative and exciting new outcomes with a core focus on materiality. Using a wide range of traditional techniques and processes, her materials are reengineered and revalued to reveal their future potential and use.

β€œEach piece has a balance between form and function and can be perceived by the viewer as pieces of art or functional products,” says Kidger. They also make for a pretty powerful statement regarding our use and misuse of plastic waste.

It all started in 2012, when Environmental Studies major Lauren Singer noticed a fellow classmate would bring his lunch in a single-use plastic bag, a disposable water bottle, and a plastic takeout container.

“I would sit there and think: we are supposed to be the future of this planet and here we are with our trash, messing it up,” writes Singer. That was the moment she decided to embark on her Zero Waste journey.

Her inspiring journey is documented in her tongue-in-cheek blog Trash is for Tossers. To Singer, Zero Waste means that she does not produce any garbage whatsoever. “No sending anything to landfill, no throwing anything in a trash can, nothing. However, I do recycle and I do compost,” she explains.

And according to this NYC clean-living guru, her lifestyle can be easily adopted, being simple, cost-effective, and actually fun. You can follow her tips and tricks on her different social media platforms.
