These Illustrations Require Problem Solving Skills

Award-winning Illustrator Nishant Choksi can rest on his laurels. His caricatures have been featured in top tier publications from The Guardian to Vanity Fair, and he has worked on advertising campaigns with brands as huge as Vodafone and Dyson.

Though a creative at heart, his approach to illustration is very demanding. “I come from an Asian background, where a career in the arts was not encouraged,” he explained in an interview with Lecture in Progress. “Because of this I had to fully commit myself to it and do it early.”

As such, he treats his job like any other, saying that illustration requires problem-solving skills. “I’ll be given an article, headline or subject, and I produce humorous, character-based concepts for articles,” he described the work process. “When you do get a job, the sketch phase – looking for the idea and getting the right concept – is a lot of fun, even though you always have the fear of not solving it,” he adds.

His weapons of choice: pencil and uni-ball micro for sketching, Winsor & Newton brushes for inking, Sketchbooks and stacks of A4 paper for the final artwork, and Photoshop for coloring.

Take a look at some of the finished results:
