This Illustrator Loves Drawing Food and Cats

Diyou Wu (aka Decue Wu, aka DQ) describes herself as “a foodie who happens to draw.” Born in Shenzhen, China, she moved to the US when she was 22 years old, and earned her MFA degree from MICA’s Illustration Practice program in 2014.

Currently working at Airbnb as an illustrator, her work focuses on fashion illustration, lifestyle, and editorial work. But aside from her professional work, she also loves to draw for fun, focusing mainly on her adorable cat, Sashimi. She also runs an Etsy shop where you can buy illustrated works of hers, printed on pins, cards, and more.

“I like working on editorial projects; it challenges me to think creatively and broadly,” she shared with VoyageLA. “Most of all, I like to step out of my comfort zone and continue to grow into the artist I’ve always dreamt of being.”

“I have been influenced by my mixed culture and languages, includes Mandarin, Cantonese, and Hakka,” added Wu. “I was a very curious child, but also easy to give up on things. I have taken piano classes, Taekwondo, Chinese traditional ink calligraphy, drawing, and dancing… but drawing has been the only passion that’s remained constant.”

“I feel so grateful for my parents who always support me in throughout my passions and hobbies. They encourage me to pursue my art dreams and have always been proud of what I do.”
