Miss Wondersmith describes herself as a magic-maker who throws parties for strangers and creates detailed glass and ceramic artwork inspired by nature. The Pacific Northwest-based crafter likes to gift strangers her creations because she wants her artwork to be accessible to people of all social classes.

I’m still slowly working away at my Messengers Series! I have been using a teensy paintbrush to paint on my various colors of underglaze. I do each part in three coats to ensure full coverage, then add more texture and details. I can finish painting about one set on a good day, so getting all twelve done will definitely take some time! Once I finish with all of them, they will be fired again to set the underglaze. Then I will paint more details, emphasize the lines, and apply a couple kinds of glaze. After that, one final finishing touch ✨ I only fire most of my pieces twice, but I really want to get a good depth in these illustrations so I am giving this set special treatment! The colors right now are an approximation – the true colors will show up after firing when the organic pigments burn out and the mineral pigments are transformed by heat. (That’s why test tiles are so important!) This is highly-detailed work requiring a lot of concentration (I even wear a headlamp while painting inside the goblets so I can see better to make everything more accurate) but you know what? “Because I want the creations that I put my heart and soul into to bring wonder into someone else’s life. Because several brushes with death have made me appreciate the magic of this world and given me a new perspective about why I fought to stay alive,” Miss Wondersmith shared on Bored Panda.

Her main goal is to create a world with “a little more wonder in it” and to teach others how to do it, so she created a blog where she shares “everyday magic,” recipes for meals, handmade body care products, etc.

Furthering the Saga of the Animal Project (which definitely needs a better name!)… remember those little bowls with animal and plant designs? I built them up into big cups. Then to those cups I added some little bases and started on the really fun part: the exterior decoration! On the back of the cups I added a bunch of raised dots (which was more than just an aesthetic choice; they will also help with the grip of the finished cups.) If you live in California, you may have seen a familiar face on the news last night! I am so grateful to KCRA for doing a story about the ash-glazed chalices I sent to Camp fire survivors (glazed with the ashes from each of their lost homes.) I have to admit that the footage moved me to tears, as the majority of the story was about one survivor's experience who opened up about what she had lost and how much these pieces meant to her. (One was for her; the other was in honor of her mother, who passed due to fire-related health problems in July.) Seeing Annie caress and hold the chalice I sent her glazed with ash from her and her mother's lost home was so incredibly moving. They way she held it tightly against her heart and spoke of the comfort it brings her… 😭That moment right there makes every single second of this project worth it. Knowing that I have created something that someone can hold onto in remembrance of the world she was torn away from fills both my heart and my eyes. My goodness I am humbled by this experience. Thank you, Annie, for baring yourself and sharing your story. Thank you to everyone involved in this project for trusting me with something so meaningful. As much as I love sending my ceramic artwork out into the world, there are a few series that I just can't bear to part with. I created this set of pinch pot cups and freeform plates during a time of reflection. The series is titled "Love Letters" and carries snippets of love letters about people I have truly loved in my life – family, close friends, past partners, my present sweetheart. I awoke with the idea in the middle of the night and wrote down all of the love letters I could think of. Then, without looking at them or editing them first, I inscribed them permanently on my ceramic pieces. That way felt more pure, less calculated. I still love to re-visit these pieces from time-to-time and be reminded of the warmth those memories instill in me. This series of work even inspired one of my special events, also titled "Love Letters" about this time last year!
