Artist Creates Magical Sculptures that Blend the Real with the Surreal

Artist Ellen Jewett creates intricate porcelain sculptures of sea and land animals, blending the real with the surreal.

Her unique creations, made with enviable technical skill, feature animals in semi-natural environments. Whole forests grow out of a bird’s wings, seaweed interwinds with a sea horse’s tail, and a flower bouquet erupts from the shiny surface of a beetle.

Her sculptures are then coated in polymer, which allows Jewett to add more details to her creations, such as fins and feathers.

“Plants and animals have always been the surface on which humans have etched the foundations of culture, sustenance, and identity,” explained the artist in her website. “For myself, natural forms are a continual source of fascination and deep aesthetic pleasure.”

When asked how she manages to create such little details, the artist answered: “very carefully!”
