“The pen is mightier than the sword.”
That’s a phrase uttered by one of Philippines’ most iconic heroes, Jose Rizal, and for the most part, it’s true. Words can do a lot. Words can free countries and liberate people, for example. But, for artists, it’s not the pen that’s powerful, it’s the pencil, which they use to draw and design things that they feel so passionate about.
For German artist Steffen Kraft, the thing that he’s so passionate about happens to be our society.
You see, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the world is sick. If you just take the time to look around, you’ll see how everything seems to have gotten worse over the years. However, the problem here is, not everyone can see how things are worse, nor do they bother to care, especially since it’s not always so evident.
Kraft’s work highlights most of the hypocrisies in life, showing us the biggest ironies that we face on a daily basis in hopes that it helps open our eyes to the truth.
