Artist Uses Scanograhpy to Create Portraits

Maitha Demithan is a Dubai-based artist who had a quite colorful career. Through the years she was working in a variety of media before she settled on the use of scanography to make her portraits. It all happened in 2009.

“I let the process of scanning and drawing in the presence of the living being – be it human or animal – define the portrait and the outcome,” Demithan shared on Colossal. “The outcomes are difficult to categorize or express as the interactions between the ‘sitters’ and between the ‘sitters’ and myself create the moments I wish to capture. These often hold an emotional quality.”

The artist has exhibited her work throughout the Middle East, Germany and Australia. You can find her creations in her online store, or on her Instagram where she shares some of her digital photo collages.

Thank you Tribe Photo for this post! #Repost @tribephotonewmedia ・・・ Tribe Artist – @maithademithan _ Maitha Demithan: Addresses the Human Condition Layering scans to capture the essence of a moment. _ Demithan’s work stems from a fascination with capturing the physical appearance and personality, the essence, of her fellow human beings. She is continually seeking new ways to achieve this end. Demithan appropriates an A4 flatbed scanner to record the surface of figures and objects and then composes these multiple views to create her poetic, layered images. She considers this process a method of painting with light and relishes the elements of time and control required by the meticulous practice of digital scanning. _ ‘She playfully subverts the flatbed scanner’s prosaic function of duplicating documents by using it to produce richly hued portraits’ – Excerpts from the article published in Tribe issue 00 Images – Courtesy of the artist.
