Between Cartoon and Photo, This Artist Imagines a Hyper-colored World

When the outside world seems too monotonous, it’s better to add a splash of color and share the result on Instagram.

That’s why Vicka, whose real name is Maria Victoria Perez, creates “enhanced” photos with her favorite graphic-tools — Illustrator and Photoshop. The concept cannot be more simplistic: on each of her basic shots, the Ecuadorian artist superimposes her drawings, creating from reality a cartoon with saturated colors.

Born in Quito, Ecuador, a resident of Barcelona from 2016 to pursue a specialized course in illustration, the 21 year-old artist and designer began to reimagine her environment for a little over a year. She shares the hybrid images – where photos and drawings intertwine with ingenuity – on Instagram.

She says she has a partner in her project who takes the photos, and then she works on each of these photographs, letting them guide her in the artistic direction that suits them the most.

Vicka is not afraid to hijack her appearance; whether drawing a swimsuit dripping on her body or customizing a scooter on which she sits, Vicka conjures an alternative reality in which we would like to check out in more detail.
