Camilla Perkins’ Bold and Beautiful Paintings Are the Blast of Color You Need

The first word that pops to mind, when seeing UK-based artist Camilla Perkins’ illustrations is: vibrant. Her method involves using black pen or paint onto acetate and then scratching every detail on the surface with a knife. Her pieces are then scanned, and the vivid colors are added on or adjusted using Photoshop.

Through bold colors and textiles, Perkins’ illustrations and paintings burst with life, in all its glory. Her art has a handmade feel to it, adding a sincere dimension to her pieces, that in turn, portray her sense of wonder with the world around her.

Driven by what she sees as an underrepresentation of diverse ethnicities in illustration, a lot of Perkins’ work is dedicated to the vibrancy of African city life.

“I’ve always been attracted to the bright colors and organic shapes of African prints,” she explained to The Guardian. “They have the amazing ability to tell a story and to both look modern and ancient at the same time.”
