Now we know a little more about the casting of the Pirelli 2019 calendar, directed by Scottish photographer Albert Watson.

Two months ago, Albert Watson was selected to shoot the famous calendar of Pirelli of 2019. Today, some of the names of models dropped: Gigi Hadid and Astrid Eika, dancer Misty Copeland, actresses Laetitia Casta and Julia Garner, dancers Sergei Polunin and Calvin Royal III and fashion designer Alexander Wang. The casting of the Pirelli calendar for 2019, shot by Albert Watson, was revealed in a behind-the-scenes video.

The tire brand has granted a totally free reign to Watson, a renowned master of chiaroscuro. The first images unveiled in the short video predict a vision of sobriety and finesse. The presence of two African-American dancers, Calvin Royal III and Misty Copeland, is part of the desire of the calendar to preach diversity and extends the achievement of Tim Walker with Pirelli 2018 calendar and its cast mostly consisted of black models (including P. Diddy, Naomi Campbell, and Lupita Nyong’o).

The reason why Albert Watson was chosen by Pirelli is simple: he knows how to tell stories, like Tim Walker, who had rehabilitated Alice in Wonderland to our modern world for the previous calendar. Watson is known for his portraits of Tupac, Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell in their youngest years, as well as one of Steve Jobs’s most famous photos.

The photographer had already shot most of the photos for the calendar in April in New York and Miami, and twelve images that illustrate each month of the year seem to be already selected. We can’t wait to see the result.
