Katie Kimmel’s Ceramics Are Barrels of Fun

Working from her studio in the Mojave Desert in California, Katie Kimmel creates playful ceramic pieces that don’t take themselves too seriously. Because who wouldn’t love to own a vase shaped like a silly dog?

Since receiving her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015, where she studied ceramics, video, and painting, Kimmel has been hard at work. But with more than 30 thousand followers on Instagram, it’s clear that her playful aesthetic is appreciated greatly.

“I took ceramics classes as a kid and have always been very sculpture-minded when it comes to making art,” she told the Urban Outfitters blog. “In college I had the facility to start working with ceramics again and it was a dream come true! I love feeling connected with my younger self who loved clay.”

Talking about her artistic process she added: “I try to be nice to myself when I’m working and mentally it’s allowed me to go to a lot of weird places. Also I take time to work in different mediums and try new things, then when I come back to ceramics I find that the new things have a way of influencing the way I work.”

And her inspiration? Well, clearly – her dog. “My little goofball dog Pony! She is a Min Pin mix and has the funniest personality. I like to pretend she is my apprentice and we both have a deep passion for snacks.”
