Meet Benjamin Flouw, Marseille-Based Artist and Children Book Writer

Benjamin Flouw is a multi-talented creative personality who works as an illustrator and art director and writes children books in his spare time. How does he do it all?

He swears by a tiny but clear workspace. “My workspace is actually a very tiny room in my house in Marseille. It used to be some kind of closet and I revamped it entirely so it could fit a computer, room to draw, a library and some storage. I wanted it to look like a blank page so there’s almost nothing on the walls and everything is white paint or plain wood. It is also very important that there are plants and books everywhere,” wrote Benjamin.

Quick composition with rock texture. ⠀ ⠀ For years I didn't want to show the HOW : how my illustrations are done, where do I work, what do I look like, how do I find new ideas. Because I thought nobody cares. ⠀ But recently I got asked a lot about the HOW, so here's a bit of it : I get messy. I really have this inclination for animals who looks like they have been painted. I mean, ok, I enjoy looking a good old dull grey hippo, they are fun to watch; but look at this jaguar. I almost didn’t stylized the shapes of the spots, and don’t get me started on the symmetry… 👀⠀ ⠀ The jaguar is on the top of the Amazon forest food chain. This might be the cutest Giant Otter you’ll ever sea. Giant Otters are not as handsome as Sea Otters. They live along the Amazon river, have long fangs and are about the size of a dog. Also they are tough guys, they literally « eat pirañas for breakfast » ! 🐠 ⠀ But as tough as they are, the specie is in danger because of the constant destruction of its habitat. 🌳 ⠀ ✊ A few associations are trying to fight against this insanity happening in South America and especially in Brazil : @wwf @rainforestalliance @conservationorg @planeteamazon @greenpeace.⠀ ⠀ Do you give to any of those associations ?
