Photographer Captures Comical Shots of Dogs Trying to Catch Treats

It’s always fun to photograph dogs, but professional dog photographer Christian Vieler brings that to a whole new level with his amusing project of capturing studio portraits of dogs as they jump for treats. And as you can imagine, the result is a series of shots that wonderfully bring out the dogs’ larger-than-life personalities by forever freezing their hilarious expressions of sheer joy and fierce concentration.

Based in Germany, Vieler has been documenting dogs’ attempts to catch treats since 2013, when he first experimented with his new portable studio light with a feature which enables super-fast flashes of light to freeze action in the frame. As a test subject, he used his adorable Labrador retriever Lotte. As he explains, she was a “very chilled” dog and didn’t really move in front of the camera, so he had the idea to start throwing treats at her and photographing the action with the help of his new gadget. The shots he got were so unique and whimsical that he turned it into a long-term project called “Dogs Catching Treats,” which led to his first book “Treat!”, as well as a wall calendar of the same name. He has another book planned for 2019.
