]]>Inspired by her powerful (if cheeky) words, lawyer and activist, Meena Harris, launched the “Phenomenal Woman” t-shirt – a simple idea but with a powerful twist. Sported by celebrities like Alicia Keys and Jane Fonda, the proceeds from the t-shirt support non-profit organizations.
“I thought I was going to create 20 or so shirts and send them off with my friends,” remarked Harris in an interview with Shape. But after the Women’s March, the t-shirt became something of a best seller. “Instead of saying ‘ok, we hit our goal, let me go back to my regular life,’ I thought ‘holy cow, I have to keep growing this, right? We’re really onto something here,’” she recalled thinking. “Saying that women are resilient and phenomenal in their own individual ways and, together, we can get through this—that’s really what inspired me to commit to this long-term.”
And so, what started off as an idea inspired by a poem, turned into a full-blown movement. A couple of years later, and the t-shirt turned into The Phenomenal Woman Action Campaign – a female-powered organization that brings awareness to social causes, supporting a wide range of initiatives. “And here I am now, over two and a half years later, talking about it,” says Harris. “I never thought that it would be anything bigger than one month.”

“I have a pretty extensive background in art, I went to multiple art schools from the 6th grade through college,” said the artist in an interview with Eat, Sleep, Denim. “Beyond college, I broadened my creative skills through visual merchandising, taxidermy, gallery installation, and museum diorama creation/installation.”
“I definitely consider myself a multidisciplinary artist, and I am always curious to learn more and experiment with new mediums,” she added. “I am currently involved with designing and creating my eponymous brand of clothing, jewelry, and home goods.”
Talking about her unique denim pieces she added: “I love denim! It is a staple item in my wardrobe, so naturally I was drawn toward ways to enhance it and make it more unique. Denim is also a great material for bleach painting on, since it is tough and durable. Plus, denim does not adhere to seasonal exclusivity, and can be worn with anything.”

]]>The two fashion icons and friends joined hands to create Premme, a brand that caters to women sizes 12-30. “Premme was born out of a love of fashion and the recognition that the industry is still lacking when it comes to the wants and needs of plus size women,” reads their website.
“We believe babes of all sizes deserve bold, fashion-forward statement pieces without compromise. At Premme, we think that clothing should be about expressing your personality and having fun, not feeling limited by society’s current fashion rules.”
Judging by their Instagram page, Premme is indeed fashion-forward. “The Premme aesthetic is feminine, bold, and unapologetic,” said the fashion duo in an interview with Create & Cultivate.
“We’ve both been leaders in the plus-size community for almost a decade and have very similar career trajectories; we’ve both been fashion editors, influencers, designers, and brand consultants, and we saw similar issues with the status quo,” they went on to explain. “We’re both passionate about social justice and equality, and we’ve chosen to pursue a creative career that affects change: giving plus-size women access to designs and styles they’ve been told (either directly or through what’s currently available for them to shop) that they shouldn’t wear.”
