Alexandra Cech describes herself as a professional pet portrait artist who creates drawn and painted images from photos. In 2011, while studying, she started Painted Paws as a hobby. Four years later, in 2015 she began painting more and more portraits. Nowadays, she has over 150 pet paintings in her portfolio and enjoys her career as a professional artist.

“Let’s face it, the vast majority of the photos we have of our beloved fur babies are going to be from our phones,” Cech wrote on Bored Panda. “Since this format doesn’t always yield the highest quality image, it can be frustrating to find out that your favorite pictures are too blurry, too dark, or in less than ideal scenery. This is where I can come in and get a bit creative.”

To create the perfect pet portrait, the artist aims to capture the spirit and essence of her subject on canvas. Most of the times she needs to bring in any lost detail, and sometimes change up the scene entirely to create the perfect composition.

Erica Eriksdotter is 39-year-old, Sweden-born artist who quit her job to paint portraits of pets. Living and working in Washington DC, the painter has been making art since she was a little girl; she sold her first painting when she was only 10. According to her, when doing a pet portrait, the most important thing is to capture the eyes.

“The eyes are the most important part,” the painter said in an article for Washington Post. “The eyes are the windows to the soul, basically. So if you do not get the eyes right, you’re screwed.”

She has done more than 60 pet portraits, mostly dogs and cats, but she hopes that one day she will get the opportunity to paint a snake. The former PR rep needs about 30 days to finish each work and also paints bridal bouquets and other flowers.
