A good commercial makes an impression, but an excellent commercial makes you get up off your sofa and run to the store to buy the thing you never needed in first place. The power of marketing is undeniably huge and influences every area of our lives, including what we eat, how we dress, what we do for fun and what we watch on TV. Now imagine your all-time favorite superhero in a witty advert that’s so good you just have to share it with all your friends.

Well, the Russian Illustrator Lesya Guseva has made that happen. She turned her amazing ideas into funny illustrations, creating ads where famous superheroes from different popular movies, cartoons and comics have the lead role.

For example, you’ll see Aquamen in a shampoo commercial, even though the artist’s original idea was to have him advertise Aquamaris nasal spray. Next you have Iron Man doing… well, ironing? Tony Stark is obviously the best attention-grabbing choice for advertising irons. And who better to star in a watch commercial other than Doctor Strange himself?

It appears that Lesya has found the perfect combination of style, humor and imagination that made us laugh and realize we really need more commercials like this.

What is known to be unstable, playful, altruistic, a little mean sometimes, and sometimes with a superiority complex? Superheroes. There’s an animal that also has similar character traits: the cat.

Indonesian illustrator Fajareka Setiawan has made a striking mix between the two in his remarkable drawings.

Setiawan transforms the characters of Marvel and DC into felines in a series of drawings he named “Catvengers”. Attributes of heroic characters adapt to cats surprisingly well.

Catpool, for example, reads an issue of “Playcat” magazine (a riff on Playboy). AquaCat (Aquaman) courageously chases a fish with his trident in a jar. Giant cat Ant-Cat (Ant-Man) is caught up with the police, while Blackkitteh (Black Panther) looks great in his suit, unlike VenomCat (Venom) who hunts chicks. They may seem cute at first, the details of the drawings show the realistic and bloody nature of both cats and superheroes.

Alex Gross likes to bring up to date portraits made during the Victorian era. He turns them into trading cards that refer to the heroes and symbols of pop culture. Inspired by the sepia photographs of our ancestors, artist Alex Gross came up with the idea of creating surprising and fun mashups that bring together history and our popular culture.

Thanks to his work of painting on the old photos, the new characters that are created look vintage. Batman and Robin, for example, no longer wear their usual shiny costumes but masks and retro capes. The artist goes even further by imagining unusual scenes such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader reconciled, on vacation by the sea.

Alex Gross has published several books grouping his paintings. You can check out some of his most original creations below.

Dutch artist Stefan Thelen, aka Super A, presents the classic characters of cartoons and pop culture like Batman and Mickey Mouse, to reveal their most realistic, fragile and human side. It seems that the subjects of his paintings are “peeled” to reveal their true face and their true nature, made of weaknesses, fears and dreams.

Thelen’s unique style relies on both playing with stereotypes and really detailed imagery, and invokes associations with the “revealing the face behind the mask” style of psychology. As Super A, Thelen is known also as a prolific street and graffiti artist.

You can check out the “real self” of the iconic figures of pop culture below.
