The Ethereal Paintings of Charlie Bennell

Charlie Bennell’s paintings answer the question: what would an eerily empty planet with sci-fi inspired aesthetic look like? Focused on digital illustration, painting, and printmaking, Bennell has an appreciation for architectural movements and how they relate to a more spiritual realm.

Her artwork explores ideas of light and shadow, color, solid, and void and the way the space around us (in its emptiness or fullness) impacts our experiences. Through her work, she hopes to create a meditative space for the viewer. “The process of creating is a meditative process and helps to slow me down,” she told Ballpitmag. “I hope to inspire the same introspection in those who view my art as I get from creating it.”

The architectural structures portrayed in her paintings seem to float in an imaginary landscape, with the occasional organic reference seeping in. “Visually, I find the relationship between structured and organic shapes really interesting,” she says.

And when it comes to her inspiration, Bennell relies on references as well as her imagination. “I like drawing inspiration from existing architectural spaces and reworking them to explore how the space around us impacts our experiences and how they interact with natural elements, light, and color,” she says.
