These Blended Photos Will Make You Look Twice

Optical illusions are beautiful to look at because they make you take a second look to understand the photo. Monica Carvalho, a photographer and digital artist, confuses the brains of her viewers.

The talented artist started a series on her Instagram page where she bends reality to create surreal pictures that will keep you guessing. In one photograph, the artist shows an eye blending in with a light bulb. She also has some funny captions for each post.

The edits are done on Adobe Photoshop, and she uses only her own photographs and not stock images. The digital artist gets her inspiration from finding similarities between the pictures. She looks at the texture, color and shape. This can be seen in all her work as the pictures blend seamlessly into each other.

When she’s not blending human organs with objects, she plays with sizes. She enlarges her friends or creates a miniature version of them. See some of her work below.

A year ago I posted this artwork ‘Intimasea’, combining my belly with a photo I took in the Bahamas. This work means a lot to me, because it’s the one that ‘brought me out there’. Your positive feedback encouraged me to further experiment with photomanipulation. At the time, my art was just a hobby. But then I left (or got fired – tomato, tomahto) my full-time underpaid marketing job in a startup, and could finally dedicate my time to what really made me happy. I found my passion and mission at the same time. Thanks to the support of my boyfriend, parents and part-time jobs, I’ve been able to live doing what I love since January 2018. In one year, I produced more photomontages than the previous five years. There are no words to say how grateful I am to all of you. With your invaluable support here on Instagram, I’ve been able to reach and inspire more people than I ever thought I would. My art appeared on TV, magazines, exhibitions. I’ve been invited to speak at the largest Adobe conference in Scandinavia in June (I am so excited but so terrified 😱). So yeah: THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE AMAZING!!! ❤️🙏🏻❤️ If you happen to still be reading this (nowadays the attention span is like 1 second per post 😂) then I’d love to have your interpretation on ‘Intimasea’. For me, this work is a celebration of the human body and nature symbiosis. Our body is a landscape of feelings, a means to discover new people and travel to new places, a canvas for art (I love tattoos😁). Our body walks us to places, hugs people we love, eats tasty food, dances to music, create artworks. P.S: I edited this photomontage to fit Instagram’s 4:5 ratio, in case you noticed it looked a bit different ☺️

Hey guys! Today is #InternationalArtistsDay so I thought I’d introduce myself a bit 👋❤️ I’m Monica Carvalho, 26, born in the French part of Switzerland to Portuguese parents. I’ve been living in Berlin for 2 years now, it’s a great city for art and open-minded people (and party 😄). My passion is to create images that make you look twice! I’ve been obsessed with optical illusions and dreams since I came across the surreal work of René Magritte as a kid. I chose Adobe Photoshop as the canvas where I would express myself artistically, because of the endless photo-editing possibilities it offers. I get a daily dose of inspiration on Instagram, which is such a great platform to discover the work from other artists! 👁 The photomontage of me sleeping under the road (2016) was the first one to get more attention. I think it’s because of the play in materiality, how I turned a soft light blanket into tough heavy tarmac. I usually combine photos from my travels with photos of my body parts (or friends/family). The only thing that matters to me when I create these images is to only use photos I took myself. That’s my artistic challenge (and of course that of finding new ideas!)💡If you want more info about my art check the Q&A on my profile 😊 Apart from photomontages, I enjoy painting and ‘normal’ photography (@monicaperture). I’m vegetarian, only wear black, love murder mystery books and eat raw cake dough a bit too often. Oh and I’m growing my half-shaved head back and it’s at that asymmetrical point where it looks really silly… 😂 What about you??? Tell me 3 things about yourself in a comment below ❤️ AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FOLLOWING ME AND YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT!!!
