This Illustrator Sets Art In A Whole Different Light

Art is usually considered a very serious business. It belongs in museums, great thinkers write about it, and we’re meant to look in awe and admire it. Right? Well, if you ask Eran Mendel, art can also be fun – and funny.

Eran Mendel is an Israeli illustrator and animator. He graduated from Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Israel’s most prestigious art school, in 2004, and has been creating art and animation for TV, print and websites ever since.

In his free time, though, Eran likes to create gifs. To the uninitiated, gifs are a form of animated picture online, that repeats the same few seconds in a short loop . You can find them everywhere, mostly in social media – most people capture a few seconds of a movie or a TV series and turn it into a gif.

But what Eran does is special – he creates his own quirky little animations of everything from everyday life to TV characters and sets them in weird or funny situations. The simple drawing style and animation make the images almost hypnotizing – seriously, it’s hard to take you eyes of off them!

Eran’s creations remind us that art doesn’t have to be grand or serious to be good, as long as there’s thought and skill behind it. Sometimes all it takes is a few frames of animation.
