Vasco Mourão’s Architectural Meanderings

Vasco Mourão’s monochromatic artwork inhabits a place between fine art and illustration. Based on his background in architecture, his work is centered around imagined cityscapes and architectural meanderings. Raging in scale, Mourão creates bespoke artworks and large-scale murals for various private clients, galleries, and institutions.

Employing a black pen, he draws on surfaces like paper, wood, and metal, with his techniques acquired through much trial and error. “Probably the hardest thing to figure out for me was to learn to deal with mistakes,” he admitted in an interview with Form Finding Lab. “Being a perfectionist is a curse in disguise because it’s very easy to get lost in an endless loop of do-undo and never get to the end of a piece.”

According to him, that’s one of the reasons he works on a medium where he can’t erase or press undo. “With pen and paper, there’s no backdoor,” he explains. “Sure… I scream and kick the wall when I make a mistake but at the end I just have to carry on and finish the drawing.”

His highly detailed work has caught the attention of brands like Apple, as well as esteemed publications like The New Yorker and The Washington Post, all of which have collaborated with Mourão.
