Artist Takes Hilarious Photos Of Her “Dying” At Famous Locations

Artist Stephanie Leigh Rose blurs the line between bizarre and genius with a unique series of photos called STEFDIES in which she poses “dead” in front of popular landmarks. She first started to documents her travels in this way spontaneously back in 2011, and after receiving many positive reactions from friends and strangers alike, continued creating the ridiculous selfies, which she describes as reminders of the “fleeting sense of life and its impermanence”. The photos are objectively simple yet powerful, inviting viewers to imagine the circumstances of the scene while being oddly funny. Sometimes her “performance” is noticed by confused passersby, whose reactions make the shots pure gold.

As Stephanie said in a recent interview, she never prepares beforehand or uses props – all pictures are created spontaneously in her day-to-day life, which is why she has dubbed them “the opposites of selfies”. While a selfie is taken in controlled conditions – you need specific lighting and special preparations of makeup, hair and wardrobe – then manipulated and distorted in post processing to achieve a desired result, a STEFDIE is a captured moment of raw reality. She argues that since we have “one life to live and don’t get re-do’s”, the same should apply to her images.
