Anything and everything can be turned into a piece of art or something creative if you are imaginative enough. And there is no doubt that Prague-born illustrator Kristian “Mr. Kriss” Mensa has plenty of imagination.

Mensa sees things around him very differently than most people. Where someone sees an everyday item, this talented artist notices an object that can serve as a complementary piece to his drawing. This includes using mushroom as a champagne cork, pasta noodles as a bird nest, and zucchini as a zeppelin.

In an interview with HuffPost, Mensa revealed that he believes inspiration is all around, and people only need to recognize it. He also shared that he had a different perspective on things ever since he started drawing as a seven-year-old.

“I’ve always liked to make my own rules, and I didn’t like being told what I should or shouldn’t draw,” he shared.

This mindset worked out quite well for Mensa, considering his unusual works became quite popular on social media. He has more than 90K followers on Instagram, while he also caught the attention of several high-profile brands who started using his artwork in their campaigns.

Movies and comic books usually feature superheroes in some world-saving missions, fighting the bad guys, or doing other superhero-related things. However, we rarely have a chance to see their everyday activities and how they behave in ordinary life situations. For example, what happens when Superman tries to scratch his back but can’t hit the spot or what is Batman’s routine like when he comes home after a fight.

Luckily, we now can see what Marvel, DC, and other comic-book makers keep hidden thanks to Lucas Nascimento. This Brazilian artist, also known as Dragonarte, creates amusing and often hilarious illustrations that show the everyday side of superhero life.

With their light-hearted humor and familiar characters, Nascimento’s works are quite popular among social media users. He has more than 100K fans on Facebook, while his Instagram following has surpassed 215K users.

Nascimento’s works don’t feature dialog and instead rely on art to tell the story. The main reason for this, according to the artist, is his intention to create stories that people from around the world can understand. He also uses popular characters and doesn’t shy away from bringing together superheroes from different franchises.

Alice Bowsher is an illustrator based in London, UK, who creates simplistic and charming illustrations. Her works usually focus on adorable characters that have a doodle vibe to them but with so much more personality.

Most of the characters featured in Bowsher’s illustrations have some quirky and unexpected dimensions to them. This can be anything from a bear wearing cowboy boots and reading a book to an aristocratic crocodile who comes bearing gifts.

You can see Bowsher’s works in numerous ways. Besides posting them on social media, the artist also released several books, has several murals across London, and did a design of strawberry-flavored beer produced by Camden Town Brewery.

One curiosity about Bowsher is that she actually never intended to pursue a career in illustration. She originally studied Fine Arts but discovered it wasn’t for her. She later switched to Graphics, where one professor noticed her gift for illustration and encouraged her to explore it further.

Bowsher decided to give it a try and never regretted it once.

“I enjoy creating things that make people smile,” she shared in a recent interview with Creative Boom. “Sometimes it can feel a bit pointless drawing silly things all day, but I think there is some importance in giving people some sweet relief from relentless bad news.”

Cartoon characters are usually portrayed as kindhearted and inherently good. But artist Ed Harrington doesn’t view them as such. For Harrington, even our favorite cartoon characters have some dark secrets. He is set on exposing them in his illustrations that are part amazing and part ruining our childhood.

For example, in his world, Winnie the Pooh isn’t some kind of bear that just wants to get his hands on some honey. Instead, he is an immoral figure that enjoys drinking.

Speaking about his inspiration for this unusual series, Harrington admitted that he actually has no “real” idea for it. Instead, he is just drawing things that he finds funny and somehow it all works out for the best. But he does have a basic approach to each work.

Harrington explains that he picks out a character and then tries to imagine what it would be like if they had different or more difficult lives.

“Or I like to think about parts of a famous character that we never get to see and what might have been hidden from us all this time,” he adds.

You can check out more of Harrington’s work by visiting his website or Instagram. Also, you can see our favorites below.

According to illustrator and designer, Dinara Mirtalipova, art communicates emotions. “It can tell stories and paint a mood,” she reflected once in an interview with the Sak. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and currently based in Ohio, Mirtalipova has come to be recognized for her distinct style of illustration. Describing herself as a folklorist, her folk-inspired illustrations feature a heavy dose of flowers, animals, and hand lettering.

“I feel my art has a sense of nostalgia,” says Mirtalipova, “it’s folkloric and musical. When I paint my stories, I like them to communicate positive energy, to be bright and colorful, to bring joy and to spread joy.” Though she works from her home studio in snowy Sagamore Hills, Uzbek and Russian folklore serve a constant source of inspiration.

Surprisingly, Mirtalipova studied first Computer Science, before following her passion and transitioning into a career in the arts. Completely self-taught in illustration and design, her creative process includes carving lino blocks and painting with gouache and acrylics.

“Only after I grew up and graduated from the field of computer science, I realized I couldn’t stop painting,” she explains. “To my surprise, I began receiving commissions to draw and design for people and companies. And after my client list grew I decided it was time to concentrate on art professionally.”

Comics we can relate to are the best ones to read, right? Well, Bella Sriwantana knows how to entertain us. She describes herself as a Thai illustrator living in Belgium who draws comics and illustrations about her daily life. She also likes mentioning that cooking and spending time with her family and dog Sunny are the things she cannot live without.

The talented artist currently has more than 115,000 Instagram followers and receives thousands of reactions on each work. She said in an interview for Bored Panda that many things greatly influenced her work, Japanese manga especially.

“I believe that Japanese manga does have a lot of influences on my style, and I did read a lot of them when I was young,” she explained. “In order to make my comics fun and enjoyable for my audience, I studied facial expressions and enhanced them with my own art style to make them even more unique.”

Her artistic journey began in her childhood and until 2014. Throughout all that time, she only drew traditionally. Then, she transferred to digital art. Sriwantana needs around two hours to finish a two-panel comic and two-and-a-half for a four-panel comic.

She is very grateful for her audience and all the support she has been receiving on social media. Scroll down and check out her work below.

According to Aley Hanson, freelance illustration is not for the faint of heart. “It’s hard,” wrote Hansen in a recent Instagram post, “but for those who love it more than any other thing, it’s worth it.”

Hansen knows a thing or two about hard work and dedication. Having studied illustration, for years she put her passion aside thinking she wasn’t talented enough.

It was only after spending 9 days in silent meditation in 2018 that she came to the realization that illustration is her true passion and calling. “Since that moment I’ve been hungrily developing my skills and style, and I’m so grateful for this vocation and the privilege of being able to pursue it,” writes Hansen.

Nowadays, Hansen encourages her followers to find strength in vulnerability and courage in self-love. “The magic ingredient to creating is believing in yourself and your creative power,” she reflected once in a candid interview with The Design Kids.

“It took some time for that to land with me, and once I did my creativity took off. When I start to trash talk myself (as we all do), I stop, look in a mirror and say ‘I have a strong creative voice’. It’s super dorky and it works. Gotta feel your own work for others to feel it too.”

This sense of optimism and perseverance also shows throughout her work. Her illustrations—colorful, naïve, and unapologetically wonky—spark instant joy, gaining an impressive following online. Describing her style as “neo-primitive,” Hansen’s work, simple as it is, has an iconic quality to it.

“Even your weaknesses lead you to create in a unique way,” says Hansen. “And if you’re conscious of them, you can push them to play to your advantage.” Follow her creative journey on Instagram.

Sara Hagale’s illustration style is minimalistic, and yet she manages to say everything she wants with it. Less is often more, and that’s exactly what her art proves. We didn’t need much to fall in love, so check out for yourself below.

Hagale uses simple tools—a piece of off-white paper and a pencil to create fascinating illustrations. She uses a lot of white (or in her case, off-white) space for better effect. It feels like her illustrations can breathe which makes them very refreshing.

There are three reasons why she chose this style. Her graphic design education background is one of them. In graphic design, according to her, “the message is everything and anything that gets in the way of that may as well not be there,” she tells It’s Nice That. The second reason is personal, and it’s that she finds this kind of style calming to draw. The third reason is what she hopes to achieve with the viewer. She wants the people seeing her art to be able to focus on one thing completely.

Her Instagram page currently has almost 500,000 followers and we recommend you check it out if you want to see more of her work. In the meantime, see some of our favorites below.

Pop culture is all around us and it’s something that is hard not to love. This is especially the case with the iconic pop culture characters that people get drawn to for various reasons. Some of us like how relatable they can be, while others just think they look cool.

Pop culture and its characters have also been a great source of inspiration for Samet Turkan. This Istanbul-based art student creates pencil drawings of all your favorite iconic pop culture characters, and saying they’re impressive would be an understatement.

What makes Turkan’s works so great is the fact that he pays a lot of attention to the details. This makes the final result so close to the source that you’d think it’s a sketch of an original.

Turkan shares his drawings on his Instagram profile where he already amassed over 100,00 followers. Each of his works is posted in the same frame as the reference, enabling you to compare the two.

In a recent chat with Bored Panda, Turkan revealed that he came up with the idea of sharing his works online after receiving praise from his teachers and friends. The internet loved it, and the positive reaction prompted him to start producing content on a regular basis.

Check out more of Turkan’s works below.
