Although Florence is known for its impressive renaissance art and architecture, this Italian city is lately also being appreciated for its street art culture. One of the people responsible for this is French artist Clet Abraham.
Abraham moved to Florence in 2005 and made this city his primary residence and place where he creates his art in. His most notable works are interventions on street signs that have been wowing tourists for several years now.
Back in 2017, Abraham started a project in which he turned regular street signs in quirky art. By placing stickers and adding the slightest manipulations to signs, he manages to turn them into an interesting piece without changing their original purpose. For example, by placing eyes and nostrils on the “straight ahead” sign, he turns it into a person picking its nose. Also, by strings and a stick figure, he is able to transform “turn left” sign into a man playing a guitar.
While Abraham got in trouble for his work early on, the authorities became lots more open to his creations after realizing they are becoming touristic attractions. Since then, the artist has expanded the project to several other cities including Paris and New York.
