With more than 15 years of experience, Mei Kawajiri is much more than a manicurist—she’s a full-blown nail artist. Originally from Kyoto, Japan, she started out as a tattoo artist but transferred to nails after realizing permanent tattoos were too much of a commitment.

Now, she’s considered NYC’s most sought after nail artist, with clients as big as Gigi and Bella Hadid, as well as Ariana Grande. And with big names comes a big fashion statement. “I love drama,” said Kawajiri in an interview with WWD.

According to her, the biggest difference between Japanese and American nail art is that Japanese designs are “more abstract,” whereas her American clients “love to have a theme.” “Even 10 years ago, [Japan was] doing what we are doing in New York: big stones, crazy charms,” she explained. “Young girls save money for their nails instead of eating a lot of food. They wanna be skinny and they wanna have cool nail art.”

Her inspiration comes from the world around her, but she admits she tries no to be too influenced by other nail gurus. “As long as I don’t copy or I don’t watch other people’s Instagram, I’m good,” she stated. “I don’t watch nail Instagrams at all. If you see [something] one time, you have the idea already on the inside of your head. I don’t wanna be like that. I wanna be always original and new.”

Here are some of her fresh designs.

Fashion illustrator Clym Evernden regards his approach to art as “very non-elitist.” “It doesn’t necessarily have to be something in a gallery or on a pedestal,” he explained in an interview with Regent Street Online, “it could be something on the street.”

Indeed, much like fashion, his art is living and breathing; his signature ink-based style—loose and playful. It’s his non-elitist approach that has caught the attention of huge brands—anything from Louis Vuitton and Audi to Net-A-Porter and Moët Hennessy.

A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Evernden studied BA Fashion Design Womenswear prior to working solely as an artist. Nowadays his work encompasses illustration as well as animation and campaign direction, with his work published on a variety of platforms including television commercials and onsite installations.

“What has always excited me about it, like clothing, is that it can play a part of everyday life,” he explained his love of art and fashion. “I love that it can be a sketch jotted on a post-it note, or a painting hanging in the National Gallery. I’m also excited by how it’s constantly evolving, aided by changes in how we consume, social media, etc.”

Take a look at some of his exciting work in the gallery below:

Scrolling through Bijou Karman’s Instagram feed, her inspiration is clear. Fashion, in its many shapes and forms, stands at the heart of what she does. Her illustrated characters, consisting almost entirely of women, don’t shy from making a fashion statement. In fact, they strive for it.

“I’ll take a runway image and create a whole story of who the girl is and where she would be,” Karman explained in an interview with Matter of Hand, where she mentioned her sources of inspiration. “I then place her in that situation within my illustration. That’s where a lot of my pieces start.”

But though her work zooms in on features like shoes and sunglasses, her work doesn’t necessarily comply with society’s beauty standards. “My work is not about trends at all,” says Karman, “that doesn’t interest me. If anything I like clothes that are more retro.”

Based in Los Angeles, Karman has graduated from the Art Center College of Design with a BFA in Illustration, but her interest in drawing began much earlier. “I’ve been into drawing since I was a little kid,” she recalled. “Eventually, something clicked and illustration became a major passion of mine,” she adds, noting that combining illustrating with fashion, another passion of hers, was only natural.

Founder of one of the most famous fashion brands in the world, Louis Vuitton was born on August 4th, 1821 in Lavans-sur-Valouse. In honor of his 200th birthday anniversary, the brand launched the mobile video game called Louis the Game, which offers a chance to discover its history.

The main character, the brand’s mascot Vivienne, walks through a world inspired by several cities like Paris, London, New York, Beijing, and Tokyo. Vivienne’s goal is to collect 200 candles as she walks through the world. The candles unlock cars with different anecdotes related to Vuitton. The character can wear accessories and clothes from some of the most iconic collections, and that’s not all.

“Join Vivienne on her adventures as she journeys to six vibrant locations across the globe in search of 200 collectible candles to celebrate our founder Louis Vuitton’s 200th Birthday. Each candle unlocks fascinating stories about the journeys of Louis, his family, and the Maison,” reads the game description on Google Play Store. It’s available for Android and iOS devices, so you can play it on your phone or tablet.

The game has one unique perk—it allows you to collect 30 NTFs as you play. They can’t be sold and you can keep them in your digital wallet.

Naida C. Castel’s jewelry pieces are a reminder that there’s beauty in the imperfect. Sometimes, a diamond in the rough needs no further polishing. Based in Barcelona, Castel’s pieces are handmade and hand-sculpted at her studio. Through her practice, she experiments with the spontaneity of forms, with the aim of displaying the honesty of the material and its process.

As such, there’s no wrong or right when it comes to her creative process. “I draw all the ideas that come to my mind,” she explained in an interview with Arcana Magazine. “When I like the shapes and random ideas I have got, I decide some viable pieces and I make samples in metal. After making, repeating and trying I put them all together to see how the family looks.”

Usually, Castel ends up choosing the roughest and most unpredictable shapes, explaining that those are often more attractive and tend to capture those elusive feelings that you can’t explain with words.

With a love of beauty in all its multitude and forms, Castel says she draws her inspiration from traveling around the world and experiencing different cultures and people. Her meaningful jewelry makes the perfect gift for a friend or yourself.

It’s common knowledge that fashion is all in the details. Dana Roski and Joyce Binneboese live by this saying. Based in Germany, their jewelry brand, WALD, celebrates individuality and free-spiritedness, incorporating nostalgic elements into each of their handmade pieces.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B-9USLdBA0Y/

“We just design what we love and what we want to wear,” the two shared in an interview with Vogue. “It is such a dream to see that people really respond to your vision of aesthetics and actually wear it.”

“There is so much available on the market but many collections feel impersonal and replaceable when in fact, jewelry is actually a very personal piece since you wear so close to the body,” they note. “There’s much more to it than just looking good. That’s the reason we were inspired to tell our own stories through our jewelry line.”

Both personal and stylish, their pieces include elements like green shells, coral, and jasper stones. There’s also an ethical and environmental core to their brand, as they make sure that the shells and coral they use are not on the protected species list. The pieces themselves are handmade by a collective of women who would otherwise be unemployed.

We know what pieces we’ll be rocking when quarantine is over…

While we tend to stick to more conservative choices with our outfits, when it comes to choosing the right accessory we like mixing things up. A playful necklace or a quirky enamel pin might upgrade your monochromatic look and take it to that next level. Such are Elyse Tolles’ earrings.

“All I’ve ever really wanted is to spend my life making and being surrounded by beautiful things,” writes Tolles on her website. Made using polymer clay, each of her pieces is individually designed, pigmented, sculpted, and detailed by hand from start to finish. The end result is a one of a kind piece – the antithesis to mass-produced, fast fashion items.

Established in 2015, Tolles’ brand, Elysian Theory, values intentional craftsmanship. Named after her first name, Tolles explains that in classical mythology, the Elysian Fields were a dreamed about place of ultimate beauty and happiness. “Elysian means beautiful, blissful, and ethereal, and also happens to be one possible origin story for my name, Elyse,” she notes.

According to Tolles, she values greatly the opportunity to be a part of the transformative effect that can happen when a person looks and feels their best. That’s also where she finds inspiration.

“I’m constantly inspired by the nothing-short-of-magical feeling you get from wearing a gorgeous pair of statement earrings,” she says, “and it’s my greatest honor to be able to pass that along to you.”

We’re delighted to introduce you to Scandinazn, a brand dedicated to recycled leather jewelry whose name comes from the combination of the words “Scandinavian” and “Asian.” The brainchild of self-taught jewelry maker, Jamie Carlson, Scandinazn isn’t for the faint of heart, providing a sort of mashup between minimalism and playfulness, with the promise to add a pop of quirkiness to your ensemble.

Originally from Kelowna and currently based in Vancouver, Carlson draws from her own background, being part Scandinavian and part Japanese. While the shapes and pops of color are borrowed from Scandinavian design, the subtle handmade intricacies of her designs echo Japanese art.

“I want my pieces to be eye-catching,” she told the Etsy blog. And eye-catching they are. “My jewelry-making process is self-taught,” she explains, “but it’s guided by what I was taught about design and construction.” With a background in apparel design, Carlson began experimenting with jewelry during a project at school where I worked with repurposed materials.

Incidentally, sustainability is equally important to her as the designs themselves. “There’s so much textile waste in the world, so I want to make the most of materials that are already out there,” she notes. According to Carlson, the main component of her products is recycled garments and scraps, making her accessories both ethical and stylish.

Check them out in the gallery below.

Sometimes, when it comes to your vocation, you have to make gutsy decisions. Eda Atay Pastirmaci knows best. Born in Istanbul, Atay Pastirmaci earned a BA in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Kingston University, UK and had worked more than five years in technology and consulting. All this to say that her decision to transition into sewing wasn’t taken lightly.

Now based in Seattle, she founded her own handbag brand, Boejack Design, in 2011, specializing in bags that combine art and fashion. “Before Boejack Design, I had a very boring engineering career,” she admitted in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I was in need of a hobby; I wanted to create something from scratch. I found this old sewing machine of my grandmother’s, and I taught myself to use it.”

Jump forward some years later, and she now sells her bags by the hundreds. Her designs blend a playful use of color with a minimalist yet functional style. All bags are hand-sewn in limited numbers, with emphasis on small batch production and local materials.

“It always starts with the question of how something is going to be used,” says Atay Pastirmaci. “First I decide what it’s going to be, say, a makeup bag or backpack. After I come up with a prototype, I use it (and ask my friends to use it) for a couple of weeks. Then I ask their opinions about the particular style: Do I need to add a zipper to the opening? Change the size? Add another pocket?”

The finished product is both practical and stylish. A perfect gift for a friend or for yourself.
