]]>Born in Brazil and currently based in Savannah, Georgia, Lee Parker’s introduction to furniture design was through her work as an interior designer. “Interior designers love and appreciate furniture, so the appreciation was always there,” she explained in an interview with Matter of Hand. “But when I was working in residential interior design, we used to have to pick out furniture a lot and I always wished that aspects of the pieces were different in this or that way.”
Still, it took time for Lee Parker to muster the courage needed to turn her attention to furniture making. “I never had confidence that I could actually design things until I came back to Savannah and enrolled in a master’s program for furniture,” she notes.
Her objects are made of organic materials, that make for an earthy, grounded, effect. Those include wood and metals, as well as ceramics, another, separate, passion of Lee Parker. Each piece is sketched out beforehand, providing blueprints for her collection. “I have to know generally what height or width I need,” she says. “It’s so much easier for me to have everything drawn; it’s kind of like having blueprints. You kind of have to. It’s a little different than being in sculpture.”

]]>Saying that Verhoeff is just a carpenter is a massive understatement. When you take a look at his work, you get a feeling that the more fitting description would be wood artist, because the things that he is able to do with wood are pure art.
Verhoeff’s works are so unique and special that they look like they came straight from a fantasy world of Harry Potter or other magic-inspired franchise. The pieces he makes are usually broken, have holes in them or almost cut in half so that you get a feeling they were in the middle of some magic chaos.
However, all of the woodworks Verhoeff crafts are fully functional.
“I describe my style of furniture as broken and weird. I like making weird furniture, something that you don’t see in a shop,” he said in a recent interview.

Most of the items come in different appropriate colors, for example, you can enjoy your TIE Fighter chairs in a black or white version. Also, the chairs can be connected so you can rule the Galaxy together with your significant one! You can also have a Jedi lamp where the light bulbs are actually lightsaber-waving Jedi in combat. You can also enjoy a rocking chair called ‘Chewbacca’, which is Cobonpue’s latest classic design for true Star Wars fans.

ErraZuriz believes that humans understand reality by constraining meaning into simplified and closed boxes which had been defined previously by cultural conventions. Since they live in this pre-established borders of the mind, they only see what was previously defined or ordered. His grand plan? To break this box.

]]>The Animal Chairs collection is born from the desire to bring closure to the everyday and urban certain species of animals, which are seriously threatened with extinction. The artist chose the chair and the armchair forms of artistic expression because they are among the most universally used everyday home furniture elements. Riera says this way the animals get a space in people’s daily lives, through the union of the two concepts, chair, and animal.
The furniture pieces are designed in Spain and produced in London but marketed to the whole world, and the production process combines the latest technologies and handmade finishes. The transition from the rough sketches by Riera to the finished walrus chaise longue or the rhino chair was carried out by the London studio JH May, whose clients include Zaha Hadid and companies such as Ferrari and Chanel.
The project is based on a multi-disciplinary sense of art, combining graphics and 3D design, engineering and manufacturing. Each piece is made in a numbered limited edition, with a corresponding certificate. The designer is working also on a flying deer, an oversized beetle and two headless pieces, the toad and the zebra, which are in the final phase of production.
