]]>Their letterpress and greeting-cards brand Hello!Lucky uses creativity to amplify human kindness, with the aid of tongue in cheek puns and playful illustrations. Aside from their greeting cards, their award-winning design studio produces anything from best-selling children’s books to bedding, ceramics, and even socks.
“We are both very creative and visually minded,” James shared in an interview with Say Yes, where she described the sisters’ division of labor. “I have the design and illustration skills, but Sabrina is also a great art director and has a really good sense of design,” she noted. “Sabrina is, however, way more left brained than I am – she’s good with numbers and strategic planning and that kind of thing.”
Their brand also gives back to the community, so you know your money’s in good hands. Amongst other activities, the sisters have co-founded the non-profit Write_On Campaign with Egg Press, created protest posters for the Women’s March on Washington, and sold cause pins that have raised over $20K for various charities.
But back to the greeting cards.

]]>Now based in Seattle, she founded her own handbag brand, Boejack Design, in 2011, specializing in bags that combine art and fashion. “Before Boejack Design, I had a very boring engineering career,” she admitted in an interview with the Etsy blog. “I was in need of a hobby; I wanted to create something from scratch. I found this old sewing machine of my grandmother’s, and I taught myself to use it.”
Jump forward some years later, and she now sells her bags by the hundreds. Her designs blend a playful use of color with a minimalist yet functional style. All bags are hand-sewn in limited numbers, with emphasis on small batch production and local materials.
“It always starts with the question of how something is going to be used,” says Atay Pastirmaci. “First I decide what it’s going to be, say, a makeup bag or backpack. After I come up with a prototype, I use it (and ask my friends to use it) for a couple of weeks. Then I ask their opinions about the particular style: Do I need to add a zipper to the opening? Change the size? Add another pocket?”
The finished product is both practical and stylish. A perfect gift for a friend or for yourself.

]]>But washing can also be a chance to pamper yourself; God knows we could use some TLC. Enter Whitechapel Soap. Based in Los Angeles, California, the handcrafted soap brand is run by Jared Simons. Describing himself as a humble soapmaker, Simons had a successful career as a cook and chef for over 20 years, before transitioning into soap making.
According to Simons, both cooking and soap making rely on science. “If you don’t understand what’s happening when you’re cooking, it’s never going to make sense,” he explained in an interview with Matter of Hand. “With that, the cooking translates to the soapmaking. I wasn’t that interested in chemistry, I just needed to understand what was going on so I spent a lot of time just looking on the internet.”
The years of experience sourcing ingredients in the kitchen also came in handy, as Simons now looks for the finest natural and sustainable oils. His ingredients olive oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, as well as water and sodium hydroxide.
Naturally, his soap bars also make the ideal gift. “I actually finish each bar with a boot brush to kind of knock off the rough edge and give it a tumbled look,” says Simons. “So each bar has a little character.”

]]>“When I began working independently, I started with small suspended pieces,” she shared in an interview with the Etsy blog, recalling how her business was shaped, “but I wanted to take the idea of hassle-free installation even further and create something where people wouldn’t need to worry about nails or drilling holes in walls.”
Zaycman’s solution was to attach the stained-glass piece to a brass bar. These pieces included insects and plants all made of smooth glass. Being attached to a bar meant these independent objects could easily be brought into peoples’ homes. “Having an understanding of geometry is useful in calculating complex shapes,” she explains.

Her imaginative spirit would find a home in House Of Wonderland. “My mission ties in with the business name,” she explained the name of her brand, noting that she wanted to become the home of wonderful things. “I want people to have something in their lives that they can look at and remember that they are awesome and they have people that love them,” she went on to say.
Her designs do just that, with her illustrations featuring uplifting quotes and positive messages that make for an overall delightful experience. “I consider my entire business and a huge achievement!” exclaimed Shearer. “I still find it hard to believe I’ve been able to get where I am today, doing the things I love.” It’s a brand you’d want to support yourself.
