People might tell you that they care about nature and the environment, but not many actually do. So in order to make a difference, you have to support your words with actions. Just like married couple and artists Jelena and Aleksandar Paunkovic did.

The Serbia-based couple decided to ditch the urban environment and instead moved to the countryside a while back. They changed their everyday life, believing that even small actions of an individual can make a difference. They ditched plastic, started growing their own food, and took other steps to minimize their impact on nature.

Jelena and Aleksandar also wanted to inspire others to consider the harm they were causing. But instead of turning to social critique, the couple adopted a different approach. They launched an ongoing series of hyper-realistic paintings of nature called “Life.” The artworks usually feature recreations of plants and grass that the two encounter during their hikes.

“We have found a way to bring nature to a home or gallery and hang it on the wall to serve as a reminder that we need to think more about how our modern lifestyle affects the environment,” the couple explains on their official website.

Their next step is to introduce their works to a broader audience through exhibitions in their native Serbia and abroad. Until then, check out more of their works below.

Orlanda Broom’s paintings are rich with colors, patterns, and layers. So rich, in fact, that one would argue they’re somewhat claustrophobic. Centered around natural landscapes—either imagined or reimagined— there’s an abundance to her work.

“My landscapes are very densely layered and a built up through lengthy over-painting and using a lot of different application techniques,” explained the UK-based painter in an interview with Jung Katz. With her more abstract work, on the other hand, she admits she has less control. “My abstract paintings are made without any tools or brushes so I have less control over the medium and this is quite a freeing way of working,” says Broom.

According to Broom, her lush and often exotic, landscapes represent fantastical places, which in some sense provide a rose-tinted view of the natural world. A sort of paradise takes shape, but the surface joyousness is often tempered by an uneasy sense of abandonment. With her abstract paintings, there is more improvisation.

“I try to exploit beauty and color in my work,” says Broom, “it’s my hook to bring people in and engage further. Generally, I’ve found people respond really well and have some personal connection, idea or memory sparked by it.”

Stephanie Kilgast is a France-based artist who creates intriguing sculptures that aim to reflect the broken relationship between humans and nature. In order to achieve her goal, Kilgast takes trash like cans and plastic bottles and transforms them into “colorful organic” artworks.

These sculptures are part of her ongoing series Discarded Objects, with which Kilgast attempts to raise environmental awareness and influence people to make peace with nature. She considers her works to have a cheerful message despite the gritty undertone, as they serve as a reminder that nature can recoup its shine if it’s left alone.

According to Kilgast’s official website, “her work has a cheerful post-apocalyptic feel to it, a reassuring reminder that nature has the capacity to grow back, if we only let it.”
