]]> When we think of street art, we usually imagine murals covering buildings or graffiti sprayed across the entire wall that immediately capture the attention. However, not all street artists want their works to be easily noticeable. For example, British street artist JPS sometimes likes to hide his artworks in plain sight.

Aside from his large-scale pieces, JPS also creates small street artworks, which he calls “mini pieces.” They are strategically placed in the urban environment, sometimes interacting with their surroundings in an amusing way. 

JPS often uses pop culture as inspiration for his mini-pieces. This includes scenes from movies like Pulp Fiction and RoboCop and works inspired by video games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat.  

 JPS creates his mini artworks using stencils and spray paint, with each one being the size of a regular lighter. According to the artist, the process is more demanding compared to large-scale art since it requires multiple layers and great precision. However, he still manages to pack a great amount of detail, making each mini-piece a hidden treasure for anyone who accidentally discovers it.

JPS has planted these intriguing mini pieces across his hometown of Bristol, UK, and in various other cities in Europe and the United States. But considering they might be hard to spot for most people, he also happily shares them on his social media. Check out more of them below.

]]> Some people consider street art as an act of vandalism. However, we’re sure that they’d think differently if they saw Tom Bragado Blanco’s creations. A talented, 34-year-old, self-taught artist who turns grey walls into remarkable 3D murals, he became viral a few years back when he transformed an old gas tank into a painting of a sphynx cat.

Also known as Braga Last1 on social media, the French artist has been into art since his early childhood. But as years went by, instead of a palette of paints and a canvas, he has chosen walls and spray paint as his medium.

Blanco specializes in optical illusions, and his artworks are highly detailed. He currently has more than 30,000 followers on Instagram and has been making street art both locally and internationally. Besides working in France, he has been invited to various art shows and festivals and is open to public and private commissions.

If you ever find yourself in his hometown of Marseilles, you should look for his masterpieces. You will be surprised by how realistic they look. In the meantime, you can see his artwork in the gallery below, where we have posted our top five favorites.

]]> When people hear the word graffiti, sometimes they assume something negative. Well, “street art” doesn’t necessarily mean something ugly and rude.

Pierrot is an artist who makes breath-taking 3D graffiti illusions that people adore. Besides being famous “on the streets”, the artist is mega-popular on social media, where he goes by the name Scaf. There, he posts images of his creations.

Big cats, dinosaurs, fish, lions, or snakes are just some of his masterpieces that bring life to boring walls. However, that is not all: to make his murals even more interesting, Pierrot likes to take funny pictures, which will inspire his followers to have fun with his creations.

A self-taught artist who learned to paint watching other artists doing their “thing”, he now owns a company as well.

“Passionate about drawing, I founded my decoration company GrafoDeco,” he wrote in a statement on his website. “Addressing both individuals and professionals (public or private companies), event organizers, associations, or all those who are anxious to bring a touch of originality to their interior or exterior decorations. I paint all supports (walls, panels, canvases …) and of all sizes.”

]]> Anonymous French artist known as Ememem is on a mission to do what his city failed to do; fix the cracks on its streets.

Tired of waiting for officials in Lyon, a city in east-central France, to do something about the deteriorating street infrastructure, Ememem took matters into his own hands. He started repairing the cracks on the pavements and buildings with colorful mosaics.

Ememem started this intriguing project in 2016 after noticing the wear and tear on the public surface outside his workshop. After patching some cracks there, he proceeded to do the same on several other locations and quickly became known as a “pavement surgeon.”

“My work is the story of the city, where cobblestones have been displaced; a truck from the vegetable market tore off a piece of asphalt,” the artist explained in a chat with Guardian.

The artist refers to his repair technique as “flacking,” which is a wordplay on the French word “flaque,” which translates to “puddle.” He adopts a free-flowing approach to the interventions, allowing the shape and size of the fracture to inspire him. This dictates the material and color he uses, as well as the resulting patterns.

While most of Ememem’s works are located in Lyon, he has also created in various other cities across Europe, including Aberdeen, Madrid, and Paris. In case you don’t have an opportunity to check them out in person, here are more of them below.

]]> Ben Johnston’s street art jumps straight off the walls. The Toronto-based designer uses color, shadow, and perspective to create his three-dimensional typography work. Self-taught, before deciding to move back to Canada to pursue his passion full-time, he worked in an agency in South Africa.

His freelance career of branding and technology actually started by accident, after a friend asked him to create a piece for the entryway of a new office building. He then decided to shift his career to mural painting.

Johnston is also super disciplined, he told Scotty Russel of Perspective Podcast that he doesn’t spend more than four days on mural—preferring to work long hours than more days.

He also does client work and enjoys riding his bike in the morning to clear his mind. His inspiration comes from flipping through classic design books on Bauhaus and taking photos of vinyl peeling. The designer has a mood board dedicated to shadow references.

]]> Phil Morgan’s art embodies the spirit of punk. With a background as both a musician and skateboarder, he admits that his roots tend to sneak into his work, with punk rock nods to the likes of Henry Rollins, The Ramones, and Fugazi.

“I grew up skateboarding from the age of eight years old,” Morgan told Another Fine Mess, adding that he was in a band through his twenties. “Skateboarding actually got me back in to my art about six years ago when I designed a bunch of skate graphics for my friend’s skate company called Crayon Skateboards,” he notes. “I always dreamed of one day seeing my art on a wizz plank.”

Based in Wales, UK, his illustration style has quickly been picked up by a plethora of skate and surf companies, as well as some more mainstream brands such as Urban Outfitters and Dr. Martens. Aside from illustration, Morgan also does screen prints and murals. “I like keeping as active with work as much as possible,” he says.

Describing his work as the ultimate post-modern street art, Morgan takes well-known elements from worldwide pop culture and repurposes them with a wink and a smile.

“I try to add a lot of humor in my illustrations which I guess also reflects what type of person I am,” he says. “I don’t take things too seriously.” His work is also very much influenced by (and borrows elements from) ‘70s psychedelia, ‘80s technology, and ‘90s street culture.

The LA-based artist explained that the inspiration for the series came from the notion of “Leave Your Mark on the World.” “Each large scale brushstroke represents the unique passions we all hold within and what we can do with that energy once we tap into it,” he shared on his personal website.

Together with his twin brother, he created a unique collaboration platform named Kapu Collective where “the duo combines their individual creative crafts to create truly innovative artwork.”

Thanks to his remarkable talent, Hula became well-known on social media as well. He currently has more than 295,000 followers and tens of thousands of likes on each post. ]]> SCAF is a French street artist, also known as Grafo Deco, who has authored numerous murals in a large number of cities across the globe. The special something he adds to his paintings is the 3D effect, which makes the subjects of his paintings seem alive and ready for action.   

On many photos, SCAF is posing with the creatures he painted, creating humorous compositions. In one of them, he is feeding a crocodile with a doll, and in another, he is taming an angry dragon. Our personal favorites are the one where he is sitting on top of a dinosaur’s skull and the one where he is being sucked by a space void.

]]> A vibrant mixture of calligraphy and graffiti, Pokras Lampas’ murals and installations are a form of elevated street art. “For me, Calligraffiti is a great way to create art non-stop,” the Russian artist shared with the Fendi blog. “Now I can easily take a big bucket of paint and perform my art everywhere. Indeed, his art takes him around the globe. A member of the “Calligraffitti Ambassadors,” over the years Lampas took part in group exhibitions and art projects held in Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Korea, and the UAE; and in 2015, he performed the world’s largest calligraffiti on the roof of a building in Moscow – an artwork that can be seen from a satellite.

Through his art, Lampas explores different directions of modern calligraphy by applying and combining his knowledge of street culture, design, and typography of different nations and generations.

“The Calligrafuturism is my self-developed style,” he explains. “We’re all living in a multi-cultural world and if I can help people to learn more about foreign calligraphy, they’ll learn more about other countries. So that’s why Calligrafuturism is so important for me, I don’t want to make something new just because I’m crazy, I want to create it because I can see a very big knowledge and that’s why I’m doing it.”

Moscow, Russia. ⠀ Из интервью 2018 года для AFISHA.Daily: — «Атриум» был твоим самым сложным проектом или нет? ⠀ «Атриум» был, наверное, для меня самым сложным проектом в России, потому что у нас я не так много каких-то публичных проектов за свою карьеру сделал. У меня была давно мысль поработать с пространством для людей, чтобы показать, что абсолютно привычная им локация, возможно не такая крутая по архитектуре и прочему, может раскрыться совсем иначе. И в этом плане у меня с ребятами, которые управляют «Атриумом», много общих идей, мы давно дружим, и тут мы сошлись: что надо делать, надо делать очень сложно, при этом нужно сделать максимально близкую технологию к людям, чтобы они могли снимать себя в зеркало, чтобы они могли видеть днем и ночью разный облик одного и того же объекта. И параллельно с этим оставить функциональность самого туннеля, чтобы по нему можно было ходить и не мешать огромному трафику людей каждый день. ⠀ — А по какому принципу ты подбирал цитаты Маяковского, Малевича, Кандинского? ⠀ Это, наверное, идет от сердца. Чем я глубже уходил в историю искусств, тем ближе мне становился наш русский авангард. Потому что вообще русский авангард — это история про то, что сто лет назад был написан «Квадрат» Малевича, в 1915 году. И вместе с этим [были написаны, озвучены] огромные, важные, революционные идеи — не столько с точки зрения там каких-то терминов из политики или из общества, а в общем. Отношение к искусству, отношение к форме, отношение к слову были созданы и реализованы лучшими умами того времени. И поэтому Лисицкий, Родченко, Маяковский — это люди, которые меня правда вдохновили искренне, и я хотел продолжить их идею, их мысли в своем переосмыслении. ⠀ ______________________ ⠀ P.S.: Конечно, со времени того интервью было еще больше сложных и масштабных проектов. ]]> When we think of street art, we usually imagine murals covering buildings or graffiti sprayed across the entire wall that immediately capture the attention. However, not all street artists want their works to be easily noticeable. For example, British street artist JPS sometimes likes to hide his artworks in plain sight.

Aside from his large-scale pieces, JPS also creates small street artworks, which he calls “mini pieces.” They are strategically placed in the urban environment, sometimes interacting with their surroundings in an amusing way. 

JPS often uses pop culture as inspiration for his mini-pieces. This includes scenes from movies like Pulp Fiction and RoboCop and works inspired by video games like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat.  

 JPS creates his mini artworks using stencils and spray paint, with each one being the size of a regular lighter. According to the artist, the process is more demanding compared to large-scale art since it requires multiple layers and great precision. However, he still manages to pack a great amount of detail, making each mini-piece a hidden treasure for anyone who accidentally discovers it.

JPS has planted these intriguing mini pieces across his hometown of Bristol, UK, and in various other cities in Europe and the United States. But considering they might be hard to spot for most people, he also happily shares them on his social media. Check out more of them below.

]]> Some people consider street art as an act of vandalism. However, we’re sure that they’d think differently if they saw Tom Bragado Blanco’s creations. A talented, 34-year-old, self-taught artist who turns grey walls into remarkable 3D murals, he became viral a few years back when he transformed an old gas tank into a painting of a sphynx cat.

Also known as Braga Last1 on social media, the French artist has been into art since his early childhood. But as years went by, instead of a palette of paints and a canvas, he has chosen walls and spray paint as his medium.

Blanco specializes in optical illusions, and his artworks are highly detailed. He currently has more than 30,000 followers on Instagram and has been making street art both locally and internationally. Besides working in France, he has been invited to various art shows and festivals and is open to public and private commissions.

]]> When people hear the word graffiti, sometimes they assume something negative. Well, “street art” doesn’t necessarily mean something ugly and rude.

Pierrot is an artist who makes breath-taking 3D graffiti illusions that people adore. Besides being famous “on the streets”, the artist is mega-popular on social media, where he goes by the name Scaf. There, he posts images of his creations.

Big cats, dinosaurs, fish, lions, or snakes are just some of his masterpieces that bring life to boring walls. However, that is not all: to make his murals even more interesting, Pierrot likes to take funny pictures, which will inspire his followers to have fun with his creations.

A self-taught artist who learned to paint watching other artists doing their “thing”, he now owns a company as well.

“Passionate about drawing, I founded my decoration company GrafoDeco,” he wrote in a statement on his website. “Addressing both individuals and professionals (public or private companies), event organizers, associations, or all those who are anxious to bring a touch of originality to their interior or exterior decorations. I paint all supports (walls, panels, canvases …) and of all sizes.”

]]> Anonymous French artist known as Ememem is on a mission to do what his city failed to do; fix the cracks on its streets.

Tired of waiting for officials in Lyon, a city in east-central France, to do something about the deteriorating street infrastructure, Ememem took matters into his own hands. He started repairing the cracks on the pavements and buildings with colorful mosaics.

Ememem started this intriguing project in 2016 after noticing the wear and tear on the public surface outside his workshop. After patching some cracks there, he proceeded to do the same on several other locations and quickly became known as a “pavement surgeon.”

“My work is the story of the city, where cobblestones have been displaced; a truck from the vegetable market tore off a piece of asphalt,” the artist explained in a chat with Guardian.

The artist refers to his repair technique as “flacking,” which is a wordplay on the French word “flaque,” which translates to “puddle.” He adopts a free-flowing approach to the interventions, allowing the shape and size of the fracture to inspire him. This dictates the material and color he uses, as well as the resulting patterns.

While most of Ememem’s works are located in Lyon, he has also created in various other cities across Europe, including Aberdeen, Madrid, and Paris. In case you don’t have an opportunity to check them out in person, here are more of them below.

]]> Ben Johnston’s street art jumps straight off the walls. The Toronto-based designer uses color, shadow, and perspective to create his three-dimensional typography work. Self-taught, before deciding to move back to Canada to pursue his passion full-time, he worked in an agency in South Africa.

His freelance career of branding and technology actually started by accident, after a friend asked him to create a piece for the entryway of a new office building. He then decided to shift his career to mural painting.

Johnston is also super disciplined, he told Scotty Russel of Perspective Podcast that he doesn’t spend more than four days on mural—preferring to work long hours than more days.

He also does client work and enjoys riding his bike in the morning to clear his mind. His inspiration comes from flipping through classic design books on Bauhaus and taking photos of vinyl peeling. The designer has a mood board dedicated to shadow references.

]]> Phil Morgan’s art embodies the spirit of punk. With a background as both a musician and skateboarder, he admits that his roots tend to sneak into his work, with punk rock nods to the likes of Henry Rollins, The Ramones, and Fugazi.

“I grew up skateboarding from the age of eight years old,” Morgan told Another Fine Mess, adding that he was in a band through his twenties. “Skateboarding actually got me back in to my art about six years ago when I designed a bunch of skate graphics for my friend’s skate company called Crayon Skateboards,” he notes. “I always dreamed of one day seeing my art on a wizz plank.”

Based in Wales, UK, his illustration style has quickly been picked up by a plethora of skate and surf companies, as well as some more mainstream brands such as Urban Outfitters and Dr. Martens. Aside from illustration, Morgan also does screen prints and murals. “I like keeping as active with work as much as possible,” he says.

Describing his work as the ultimate post-modern street art, Morgan takes well-known elements from worldwide pop culture and repurposes them with a wink and a smile.

“I try to add a lot of humor in my illustrations which I guess also reflects what type of person I am,” he says. “I don’t take things too seriously.” His work is also very much influenced by (and borrows elements from) ‘70s psychedelia, ‘80s technology, and ‘90s street culture.

The LA-based artist explained that the inspiration for the series came from the notion of “Leave Your Mark on the World.” “Each large scale brushstroke represents the unique passions we all hold within and what we can do with that energy once we tap into it,” he shared on his personal website.

Together with his twin brother, he created a unique collaboration platform named Kapu Collective where “the duo combines their individual creative crafts to create truly innovative artwork.”

Thanks to his remarkable talent, Hula became well-known on social media as well. He currently has more than 295,000 followers and tens of thousands of likes on each post. His primary intention is to change the way people looked at ordinary things that surround us and make them more exciting for passerby. Simply said, he wants to “transform ordinary into extraordinary.”

]]> SCAF is a French street artist, also known as Grafo Deco, who has authored numerous murals in a large number of cities across the globe. The special something he adds to his paintings is the 3D effect, which makes the subjects of his paintings seem alive and ready for action.   

On many photos, SCAF is posing with the creatures he painted, creating humorous compositions. In one of them, he is feeding a crocodile with a doll, and in another, he is taming an angry dragon. Our personal favorites are the one where he is sitting on top of a dinosaur’s skull and the one where he is being sucked by a space void.

]]> A vibrant mixture of calligraphy and graffiti, Pokras Lampas’ murals and installations are a form of elevated street art. “For me, Calligraffiti is a great way to create art non-stop,” the Russian artist shared with the Fendi blog. “Now I can easily take a big bucket of paint and perform my art everywhere. Indeed, his art takes him around the globe. A member of the “Calligraffitti Ambassadors,” over the years Lampas took part in group exhibitions and art projects held in Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Korea, and the UAE; and in 2015, he performed the world’s largest calligraffiti on the roof of a building in Moscow – an artwork that can be seen from a satellite.

Through his art, Lampas explores different directions of modern calligraphy by applying and combining his knowledge of street culture, design, and typography of different nations and generations.

“The Calligrafuturism is my self-developed style,” he explains. “We’re all living in a multi-cultural world and if I can help people to learn more about foreign calligraphy, they’ll learn more about other countries. So that’s why Calligrafuturism is so important for me, I don’t want to make something new just because I’m crazy, I want to create it because I can see a very big knowledge and that’s why I’m doing it.”

Moscow, Russia. ⠀ Из интервью 2018 года для AFISHA.Daily: — «Атриум» был твоим самым сложным проектом или нет? ⠀ «Атриум» был, наверное, для меня самым сложным проектом в России, потому что у нас я не так много каких-то публичных проектов за свою карьеру сделал. У меня была давно мысль поработать с пространством для людей, чтобы показать, что абсолютно привычная им локация, возможно не такая крутая по архитектуре и прочему, может раскрыться совсем иначе. И в этом плане у меня с ребятами, которые управляют «Атриумом», много общих идей, мы давно дружим, и тут мы сошлись: что надо делать, надо делать очень сложно, при этом нужно сделать максимально близкую технологию к людям, чтобы они могли снимать себя в зеркало, чтобы они могли видеть днем и ночью разный облик одного и того же объекта. И параллельно с этим оставить функциональность самого туннеля, чтобы по нему можно было ходить и не мешать огромному трафику людей каждый день. ⠀ — А по какому принципу ты подбирал цитаты Маяковского, Малевича, Кандинского? ⠀ Это, наверное, идет от сердца. Чем я глубже уходил в историю искусств, тем ближе мне становился наш русский авангард. Потому что вообще русский авангард — это история про то, что сто лет назад был написан «Квадрат» Малевича, в 1915 году. И вместе с этим [были написаны, озвучены] огромные, важные, революционные идеи — не столько с точки зрения там каких-то терминов из политики или из общества, а в общем. Отношение к искусству, отношение к форме, отношение к слову были созданы и реализованы лучшими умами того времени. И поэтому Лисицкий, Родченко, Маяковский — это люди, которые меня правда вдохновили искренне, и я хотел продолжить их идею, их мысли в своем переосмыслении. ⠀ ______________________ ⠀ P.S.: Конечно, со времени того интервью было еще больше сложных и масштабных проектов. Но этот туннель навсегда в моем сердце, совсем скоро будем его расписывать заново — будет вторая версия. Ждёте?
