This Artist is Changing the Face of a City

Istanbul is well-know for its eclectic art and architecture – from Byzantine infrastructure, to Ottoman remains, the city comprises a cultural mosaic for curious residents and tourists. Yet, history is not the only mark of Istanbul – young artists have been shaping the face of the city with their own contributions in color and style. Huge murals, for instance, decorate various parts of the city, especially Kadikoy, the up and coming neighborhood for young artists and intellectuals. The artist that goes by the name Esk Reyn is one of these amazing individuals that are contributing to the city’s culture and changing the face of Istanbul. Artist, sculptor, and muralist, Reyn has painted some insanely creative wall murals in Istanbul’s Kadikoy district, as well as countries around the world, like Belgium and the US.

Reyn is inspired by mechanical and architectural forms that he experiences in the city, rebuilding them with collages, contrasting forms, and carefully chosen colors. Some of Reyn’s influences are architectural structures, 3D graffiti art, and science fiction comics. The way that he plays with geometric forms and the viewer’s perception, really makes us feel like we are looking at something with more than two dimensions that came out of a science fiction or steampunk comic.
